Hey guys!  Who here thinks it would be a great idea for The Hylia to get a Minecraft server?

Well I do, but the only real issue is that we don't have a server.  That said, as far as I am concerned we don't have the know how on how to setup a server...

If anyone could supply either of these that would be incredible!

Please come forth

I have currently don't have either the hardware or know-how necessary for setting up a server.  However, I know some folks who HAVE set up a server, and I could easily tap them for information on the matter.  I don't think getting the thing up running should be that bad (lots of in-depth tutorials available), but they do know how to install/set up certain options/plugins that could make our lives a lot easier.

As for hardware, I'd guess the most reliable thing would be to rent a server somewhere.  However, that would mean probably upwards of 20$ a month, and that's probably not really worthwhile/feasible for a community like that.  Instead, if someone has a decent computer that they aren't really using, they could be nice and set that up as a dedicated server, and it could be up and running most of the time with little inconvenience.  It's not something I currently have, but I am somewhat in the market for a new computer, and I may be able to swipe an older computer from some people if I ask really nicely.

Well I don't think many people would be involved on the server so it would not have to handle too many clients

If you want to try it, go ahead. The big question is whether or not you can actually run a minecraft server yourself. Challenging...

It won't run on my machine, but it might for Rusty

The server currently works, tentatively.  Feel free to check it out at: 67.241.98.77:25565

The thing is set up for survival multiplayer.  So if you want to build something cool, you'll have mine and collect the materials yourself.  However Clumsy Thief and I built a nice little spawn area, which should provide a haven from marauding mobs, and make your life a little bit easier.  Just be warned that that area is protected by the server, so if you're wondering why you can't dig or break anything, try wandering a few steps outside of the walls and give it another shot.

From what we've seen so far, there's hardly any lag at all when only two people are online.  No idea how it'll hold up if more start showing up.  Also, the computer it's running on isn't exactly a great solution to this problem; it's just an older Macbook Pro, only has one gig of RAM, and is relying on a wireless card.  It's possible it might start overheating and shut down if more people get online for extended periods of time.  It's possible the wireless network will randomly fuck up.  It will shut off if someone accidentally unplugs it for more than a split second.  More importantly, it's not exactly my computer, so that makes it hard for me to guarantee that it'll be up and running for extended periods of time.  Bottom line: if someone else has a better computer that they can sacrifice to be our server, that might be nice.

Also, I'm still trying to nail down what features we want to have on the server, so I'm open to suggestions.

In short, we now sort of have a The Hylia Minecraft Server, and it's kinda cool.

It was certainly productive.

Anyways, I'll probably get around to playing some more tomorrow.  Probably find a place to settle down and build a house.  And by "house" I mean "gigantic mining complex and palace."

Bukkit finally released a stable recommended build for the 1.6 update.  I'll see about getting things up and running soon.

Alright, I've got the software running, but no good way to test it.  If someone could hop over to 67.241.98.77:25566 and let me know if it's working and/or if it's the right map, that'd be great.

Ok so I've been wondering this. What exactly is Minecraft? And where do I download it at? Last time I looked, all I could find was something you have to pay for I think. Is that right?

It's lego to the extreme basically.

it's a one off cost, but it's easy to mod, easy to mess around with and easy to have your own server, it's great.

http://www.minecraft.net/ so that's the correct site then, yes?

Anyone still play around on this? Or more specifically, on this ZHQ server deal that was created?

I still play every now and again.  I've got the Minecraft server more or less ready to go, I just haven't actually been setting it up, on account of no one really playing.  If you get the game, I could easily spend the few minute required to actually get it online.

And yeah, that's the site.

I just got banned from my minecraft server on somethingawful for dissagreeing with them on skype over whether it was ok to make another goon cry to the point of threatenning suicide, they've now changed the rules to "no carehavers" so..ummm guess I'll come back to the shitty zhq one, or join another goon one with less sociopathic admins.
