Is the 3DS version a down-port or a different game altogether?

The 3DS version is completely different and being handled by...sigh...DIMPS.  I really don't like DIMPS Sonic games.  The levels are different too, you've got Green Hill as the only one that's the same; the level selection seems pretty much to be the runner ups I would have chosen to be in Sonic Unleashed.  Also Sonic 2006 and Unleashed don't seem to be included.  I get 2006 not being included because it sucks and wasn't on a Nintendo platform ever, but they are including Sonic Colors and not Sonic Unleashed which did appear on the Wii as well...they will be including a stage from Sonic Rush...whatever.

I did get Sonic Generations for the 360 and I'm generally very pleased with it.  It doesn't play as much on nostalgia as I would have liked, with only three levels from the Genesis games, and it drags some of the worst games of the series out with it too, like Sonic Heroes, Sonic 2006 and Unleashed(although they chose a good level to remake, Rooftop Run, and didn't include the Warehog, which is what really killed the game).  Even the levels from these messy games are pretty good.  It goes by real fast, but it's actually a surprisingly good tribute.  The bosses are very dodgy though, especially the final boss which is one of the worst in Sonic history.  Still, if you're a fan of Sonic I'd say pick it up, it's really a lot of fun both the modern and classic modes.

Jord do you have a link to the full level list of the 3DS version? Haven't seen it yet.

Completely agree with you Jord in regards to the bosses, Metal Sonic and Death Egg bot are fun but Egg Dragoon the final boss and Perfect Chaos are pretty meh to lame. I also agree that 3 levels from the genesis games wasn't enough, sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles should have had a level EACH and not just be represented by Sky Sanctuary. That being said there are alot more games with "Modern Sonic" so it makes sense why he gets alot of levels.

This is also the game where he sega makes him work. Colours was great but sega really knocked it out of the park with his gameplay and level design he is EXTREMELY fun to play!

Edit: ALSO! The soundtrack is amazing in every possible way gog damn

I'd say Sonic Colors and Generations are on pretty equal footing, they both have strong core games with a lot of extra challenge modes that can be hit or miss and ho-hum bosses.  I do like that Sonic Colors is more consistent than Sonic Generations and has really cool power ups, but I also appreciate the nostalgia, visuals, and classic Sonic in Generations.   It's good to see Sonic on the up and up though.

I agree about the bosses too, but considering they had so many classic Sonic games to pull from, I really wanted to see Robotnik show up with the giant ball swinging from his hovercraft, or the drill car.

Sonic 3 definately deserved representation; Hyrdocity or Ice Cap Zones would have been great, and Sonic and Knuckles could have had Lava Reef for a fire and ice motif...but alas.

As for the level listing, here's the Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Generations#Levels

The 3DS version will also apparently have special stages, something I felt the game was missing.
