http://kotaku.com/5825495/nintendo-3ds-gets-sudden-massive-price-drop

Looks like Nintendo is reacting to those poor sales and the looming threat of PS Vita, the $250 was steep for the 3DS but geesh, a nearly $100 price drop, and given the system's really awesome lineup of games...well, I think we can expect sales to shoot up.

And for early adopters, like me, it looks like the deal will be sweetened with 20 free downloadable titles, raging from NES Viritual console games to Game Boy Advance titles...Awesome.

A pretty desperate move that I don't think they needed to make. I wonder why they chose such a significant drop over something more modest.

Let this be another lesson that you can't put out hardware without software. We saw it with the PS3 and now the 3DS. The PS3 was able to rebound in fantastic fashion, so the 3DS (which isn't even facing competition at the moment) should be able to as well.

Really glad I'll be getting 20 free games though. I was pretty pissed until I heard that. Smart move by Nintendo.

I've also never played Mario vs. Donkey Kong, so that's a nice bonus! Also Destructoid's coverage of this is horrendous, stay away from it.

Have you heard of the PlayStation Vita?

@SS: Really seems to be in response to the Vita being priced at 250 (Which is a decent frice for it considering the hardware), seems ninty wants to stop any momentum the Vita could have before it even comes out.

@Hisak:  Im suprised people are upset, thats the danger of being an early adopter. Tough shit if something drops in price it can ALWAYS happen.

The second I heard the PSvitas price I knew to wait for a price drop.

I reeally hope that Mario & Luigi and Wario Land 4 are included in the GBA lineup. I'd also like Mario Golf Advance, but I don't think that's very likely.

This is only depressing for people who got a 3DS already (at €239), just to be able to play OoT 3DS.

I want my free games

Im so very pleased at this. In fact Ill probably buy one once the price does drop. $169 is much more justifiable to spend than $250.

Also, Nintendo is now taking a loss on 3DS.

Nintendo Allegedly Taking a Loss on 3DS

You know, I love my 3DS, but I want to see the platform take off.  Nintendo did a really bad job with the timing and release of the system, and also the pricing.  I don't think anyone will deny that, and I think rather than just making incremental adjustments, Nintendo is doing a good thing in covering for their mistakes of the last few months.

I've heard so many people talking about this price drop and when they do, most of them start saying that the system seems to be a "joke" for some reason. Hopefully when more games come out the sales will rise. I might get one sometime myself but I'm waiting to see what the reactions to it will be in the long run after more games come out.

I think a lot of people just have something against 3D.  Like anything that is in 3D is just doing it to compensate for shitty content; and yeah, it's true that does happen a lot, but 3D can be a great tool to enhance an experience.  Though, Nintendo did use 3D in the way that makes people mad at Hollywood, they tried to use it as the sole selling point.

Yeah, 3D is cool, but it needs quality content to back it up, or at least somewhat enjoyable shlocky content(Avatar, anyone?)  Had 3DS launched in June with Ocarina of Time as a launch title, an improved eShop on day one, and all those e3 trailers to get you excited for the future then and there, I don't think Nintendo would have a problem, but they screwed it up, and now everyone is saying Smart Phones are the only way to game.  Angry Birds, taking over the world.

Well, the only thing I'm angry about is the fact that everyone says Smart Phone Gaming is the new titan, and the only example I see for this trend is Angry Birds and the thousands of other 5-second apps on whatever service your smart phone uses.  Once good content starts rolling out for 3DS, at the new price point, I think things will change.

ANYWAY, while we're on the subject of the death of the handheld, PlayStation Vita has been DELAYED in US markets until 2012 after the holiday buying season.  Perhaps Nintendo jumped the gun a bit on the price drop, but hopefully the delay of Vita and the new price point will push 3DS's installed base through the roof...hopefully.  Either that or prepare to enjoy the jobs of cell phone gaming.

Wal-Mart is dropping the in-store price to $170 TODAY, meaning that you can get the system for cheaper and still get the 20 free games if you buy it and go online with it before Friday.

Alright, so I just did the system update on my 3DS and connected to the eGame Shop. Does that mean I'm eligible for the 20 free games? Are we supposed to get some kind of confirmation?

You should be fine! I don't think there's any sort of confirmation system. We don't get the NES games until September 1 anyway.

I hope they'll still be in stock today.  I suggested this to SmashBrawlZelda.  Really, it's a sweet deal to get such a major price deal and STILL get the 20 free games!

Quote from: Official Nintendo News
The first part will allow 3DS owners that are in the program to download 10 free NES Virtual Console games starting September 1st, 2011.  Games will include Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong Jr., and Balloon Fight.  These games will eventually be sold in the eShop, but those that are part of the Ambassador Program will have early access to these titles.  Nintendo has also said that when these games do release to the general public later in 2011 that Ambassadors will be able to download the updated versions for free.  I don’t know if that means the updated versions will have 3D or not, but I’m sure everyone can speculate.

The second piece of the program will grant 3DS owners in the Ambassador Program the ability to download 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games by the end of 2011.  These games will include Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgames, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong.  These titles will NOT be available to purchase in the eShop and will therefore be exclusive to members of the Ambassador Program.

Mostly wanted to point to the already announced games - a lot of classics!

And this will mean having to beat LoZ and Mario Kart: Super Circuit and others all over again on the 3DS

Aren't these cool?  Which others do you think are likely to make it?  A Kirby game, hopefully, at least!
