Chapter: 34
The black helmet fell to the ground with a loud clang, he took his sword and raised it proudly. Ales now understood everything and could only stand in awe as he watched the true face of darkness reveal itself. The man who had taken the slain Hesernagoth’s powers and pretended to be him was…
“Now you and I will do battle…because we all know there’s only room for one guardian” he said.
“You’re no guardian…you’re…” Ales yelled but he was unable to finish his sentence. The man in front of him grinned.
“The true guardian…” he said “The real Sela” he yelled. Ales wasn’t sure how it all worked but it was true: somehow in front of him was an older version of himself.
“How is this possible? This makes no sense” Ales said, however he was still shocked and therefore not in a battle position. His dark self took advantage of this and quickly leaped into the air and kicked him in the face. Ales crashed into a rock but got up quickly and snapped out of his confusion preparing himself for another assault. His dark self fired away dark energy and teleported all around Ales to confuse him. Ales deflected the dark energy and dodged the dark one’s assault countering with a bombardment of fire orbs.
The dark one grabbed the orbs in the palm of his hand and laughed and afterwards proceeding in returning them to the sender. Ales quickly dodged them but he barely got away due to their high velocity. They rammed into each other clashing their blades. Apparently his older self was much stronger because Ales was having a hard time holding him and just seconds after he felt for the first time in his life his own blade cut him although lightly as he back flipped to get away. How could he be so strong? He was as strong as a full god yet his body shouldn’t be able to handle it.
“Fighting you is no fun it seems…hmm oh but you must be wondering how my body can withstand full power?” The dark one said. Ales nodded but didn’t let his guard down this time.
“You see the body can only take half of a god’s power normally and like you are now I once only possessed half of Sela’s power. But as I acquired the dark powers of Hesernagoth they merged together with Sela’s and while the power itself only feels like a half god’s powers…they are as powerful as a full god” This chilled Ales to his bones as he knew that against such an opponent he’d stand no chance.
Ales attacked his dark self with both fire and steel but all attacks were futile, he was too fast and too strong for Ales to handle. Before he knew it he was lying face down on the cold rock, feeling the cold rain all over his back. He felt a hand grab his hair and slowly pulling him up.
“This is going to hurt” he heard himself say behind him in a sadistic voice. Seconds later his face was rammed into the ground repeatedly until he nearly passed out. He was then thrown a few meters crashing into the ground. He could barely move coughing up his own blood and nearly choking on it. He could only watch as his dark self slowly approached him. He had more of a beard than Ales did and more scars…his face was older and his hair slightly longer but was hanging freely, he had the same eye patch as Ales did and still wore Hesernagoth’s dark armor with the exception of the helmet, his face was very pale…almost white and his version of the Mizka was more worn out than Ales’.
“Why?” Ales asked as his dark self stood before him. The dark one grinned and chuckled.
“I have offered you clue after clue and you still don’t fully get it? Well I guess I could explain it to you before I finish you: I was like you, I had the same quest as you…and I wanted to save Zelda as much as you do.” The dark one seemed sorrowful and paused but soon continued:
“I failed however in doing so and I had to watch her dead body…all twisted…you’ve seen it I have no need to describe it. This was too much and I realized that I was no hero, I was a mere pawn playing the goddesses game and they were having fun on my behalf. I rebelled against them and thanks to research of ancient scrolls I heard of a portal that could take you back in time. I entered this portal…you see Hesernagoth’s Essence was locked away in the same place as that ancient god’s essence once was, I took Hesernagoth’s powers as my own and simply acted out the legend as it was said: hiding in the Triforce of courage, creating Ganondorf thus creating Link and so on”
“So…Hyrule has been stuck in a time loop?” Ales asked. His dark self nodded but then chuckled again.
“Yes…I too fought myself and I won due to the incredible rage I had” Ales felt hopeful all of a sudden: that would mean that he would win as well and afterwards he could simply not go back in time thus stopping the loop.
“Do not think you’ll win though” his dark self said. “You see this time things are different: Zelda didn’t die and even such a small change could completely change the outcome of our battle” Ales heart sank now that he realized the truth behind this. What would he do? There was no way that he could win but if he died then Hyrule would be destroyed along with everyone…not just Hyrule the entire world would be no more…he had no choice, he had only used that dangerous power once before and only for a short time…the full power of Sela which would ultimately if used for too long kill him.
“Now fighting you has been uninteresting and therefore you are of no more use to me…tell the goddesses I said hello” his dark self said and swung his blade towards Ales’ throat. Just as it was about to connect a mighty wall of fire sent the dark one flying. He had not expected that to happen, in front of him was no longer the scared younger version of himself…it was pure fire shaped as a phoenix holding the Mizka in it’s talons.
“I…I remember…” it said, it’s wings widened and it leapt into the air hovering above the dark one
“I remember everything” the phoenix yelled and threw a gigantic fire orb towards Ales who was burnt a bit trying to get away.
“Sela?” he could barely speak…somehow he feared the guardian he once was.
“Ales…you are hereby sentenced to death by the behalf of the goddesses…and me” Sela said with an angry voice and dive attacked Ales ramming him into a wall. Sela took his blade to finish Ales off when Ales threw dark fire in his face and kicked him which knocked Sela back.
“This fight just got interesting…I wonder how long your body can take all that power at once” Ales said and grinned as he felt more confident…for a second he had forgotten that he had godly powers of his own.
“You are a fool to oppose me Ales…you are a mockery of everything you once stood for” Sela said with anger in his voice and slammed his talons into the ground thus making the entire mountain crumble, as lot’s of debris was falling down Sela used telekinesis like powers to grab all the debris at once and throw it at Ales. The debris was blocked by dark energy from Ales and shattered to pieces. Ales then proceeded into somersaulting ready to plant his blade in Sela to finish him off. With a quick flap with his wings Sela created a barrier made out of fire which burnt Ales knocking him back. Sela then controlled this fire with his will and made it surround Ales and shrink thus trapping him in fire.
Ales screamed in agony as his entire body was catching fire and struggled to break free. Sela only watched and awaited his death. Eventually Ales somehow summoned a huge shockwave of dark energy that destroyed the fire and knocked Sela towards a sharp rock, the pain was horrible as the sharp rock pierced through his back and out of his chest. Sela didn’t even flinch though and ignored the pain simply removing the sharp rock and got back up.
They crashed into each other and smacked each other around into various objects. Steel often hit steel and fire hit dark energy. The mountain itself was almost just a pile of rocks which both of them used as weapons. Ales grew tired and climbed to the highest rock summoning a huge dark orb that easily could destroy half of Hyrule.
“You fool it’ll kill you too” Sela screamed at Ales who simply laughed and nodded.
“Indeed it will, if I’m going to die I’m taking people with me” he screamed and launched the orb. Sela felt panic like never before and rammed into the orb with all of his power pushing it back. But even his power couldn’t hold it for long and Ales laughed manically at him.
“Forgive me…” Sela said to himself as he was feeling weaker and weaker.
“There is no need to ask for forgiveness” a female voice said. Sela opened his eyes and found Din in front of him.
“Din” he said in a shocked tone. Din smiled at him and said:
“I will bestow power upon you so that Hyrule can be saved and your destiny fulfilled” shortly after that she disappeared and Sela felt strength like never before. He could now easily knock the orb back at Ales.
Minutes later all was silence…Ales had screamed in pain as the orb had knocked him to the ground. Sela now stood before him with Mizka in hand. Ales was in so much pain that he could only watch as Sela took his blade and shoved it through Ales’ throat. Sela disappeared and became once again the bounty hunter Ales. His skin was burnt all over however and was even falling off, his bones were shattered and his skull could be seen. He had overused Sela’s powers and that was too much for his body. He fell to the ground feeling faint and tired…the three goddesses appeared before him and smiled gently, they raised their hands and soon light surrounded him.
“Am I dead?”…

Epilogue
A week has past since the war and Hyrule is slowly recovering. The bloodline of the hylian knights is intact. Everyone seems to be in a good mood…except one.
“I’m sorry princess but if he was alive he’d be back by now” Zelda’s nursemaid said with a sad and worried voice…after all princess Zelda had been staring out at Hyrule field from her balcony in Hyrule castle hoping to see him return.
“He can’t be dead…he promised…” Zelda said and felt tears coming down her cheek.
“Sometimes you can’t live up to a promise, you know that” the nursemaid said and wiped the tears of her face. Zelda left the balcony and walked down the hallway and left the castle. The market was busy with repairs and there were still losses that families had to take care of. What had actually happened between Ales and Hesernagoth…no one knows, in fact the sudden end of the war…how the fallen had crumbled and posed no more threat…how a gigantic dark energy ball had appeared…the entire thing was a mystery.
She nearly tripped as some kids rushed by her playing; she couldn’t help but to smile as she knew that it was all thanks to him that these kids still played. Another mysterious thing was that when the mountain’s were searched they found a hollow dark armor and nothing more…no body was ever found
She continued out of Hyrule market and stood on top of a hill on Hyrule field enjoying the breeze. Some days ago she had been at Link’s funeral but she wasn’t as sad as the others as she had a moment to speak with his spirit shortly after he saved her one last time…she missed him so but she knew that he was happy now and that made her happy. But she didn’t know about him…where was he? It seemed as if he had just disappeared into thin air…was he dead as they all said…or is he still out there?
She lay down in the grass and looked at the blue sky…it was all so beautiful and she couldn’t help but to cry, it was hard for her to handle but she knew that she had to be strong.
“Dear goddesses…please tell me if he’s ok…please tell me if Ales is still out there” she whispered and closed her eyes. She felt her nose tickle and got up scratching it, upon doing so something fell off her nose…
…a red feather
