I hear that it will basically go on past the end of the Hobbit book to tie it in better with the LOTR. I have only read TLOR and The Hobbit, never any of the extended stories. But from my understanding the 3rd movie would deal with that and the time in between The Hobbit and LOTRs.

Hmmm, I don't know how much Tolkien wrote about the in between part actually (apart from what's in the two books and their appendices). I trust Jackson, but I hope he won't go around retconning too much. Some LOTR cast cameos are fine, but I don't think it should be forced into a double trilogy like Star Wars. Don't become Lucas, Peter Jackson. It'll make both trilogies less awesome.
If he does manage to bridge the two stories (books) together, it might be interesting. Like, after the 3rd Hobbit movie you'd totally want to watch LOTR again. (I haven't done so in a couple of years and probably won't until The Hobbit comes out.)

I rewatched the LOTRs extended cuts a few months ago when I bought them on Blu Ray. I have to say they are brilliant movies, but damn it's not easy to watch almost 12 hours of movie no matter how good they are. I think Jackson will do a good job on these, he seems very passionate about Tolkiens world. But hopefully his passion doesn't become a bad thing for the series.

Hey Newhyrule? Hey Billy! I never did watch the extended cuts. Yes, I am ashamed. Fellowship of the Ring's and Two Towers' extended cuts are great. Return of the King's is dissapointing.

So call up the cool members and make them come back. Edit: Actually let's just watch the Django Unchained trailer again.

Edit: Actually let's just watch the Django Unchained trailer again. This will be my favorite Christmas movie after An Unexpected Journey.

I feel like it's become my job to keep this place alive, which is dumb because I'm not very good at it. Somebody else take up the reins.

See?? Anyway I finally played Portal and it was a good game. I want to get the sequel, but I'm unsure if it'll play on my computer and I don't want to spend $20 on something I'm not certain about. Guess I'll wait for Christmas Steam sales.

Question for the Whovians here:
I've never watched so much as an episode of Dr. Who before. Knowing that the show goes back for decades, if I wanted to get into it, when would be a good starting point?
I'm thinking of starting with the first season with the David Tennant doctor (the tenth doctor?). What do you guys think?
