But I'm guessing that this someone/thing appears in both N64 games, so perhaps it is something as simple as the Ocarina, which had an increasing popularity in the real world, and I would still do anything for...

All I can think of is Keeton, or Keaton, or however it is spelt, but supposedly, the Keaton are also enemies in TMC. Though they are indeed enemies indeed, the Keaton (and more specifically the Keaton Mask) is said to be popular in OOT & MM (where you even see an actual Keaton ) Eater, you may now invent your own "Who am I"!
