In The Minish Cap.
Three dollars if you can logically intertwine the Zelda and Mario timelines.

It didn't techincally "start", but since he's already got a cloud, I assume it's theoretically possible.
There you go with your fan fiction again.  Is this joke old yet?

Now that's not very nice... May I incite people to go back on topic and discuss the matter at hand?

I for one am convinced that a timeline exists, and that it's not as simple as putting every game chronologically. By the way, is the sudden existence of baby mario, baby luigi and baby bowser explained in any of the games?!

Yoshi's Island is about the closest we get to the origins. Their placement in Partners in Time is all down to the wormhole guff.

The problem with Baby Bowser is he's played by Bowser Jr in Partners in Time. Probably a mistake in the games production, but its there.

We also now have Baby DK, Baby Peach and Baby Wario thanks to Yoshis Island DS...

Well, OoT Link is in Smash Bros 1 and 2, but the 3rd seems to feature TP's Link.
Mario features in all three, and thus it's impossible to link the two series together.
There's also the problem of Young Link's appearance in Melee.

If we discount Brawl and Melee, we can assume the two series (Mario and Zelda) exist within the same universe then the timeline would have to work something like this:

MC > etc. > YI > YI2 > PiT (past) > YS > DK > MB > SMB > SMB2 > SMB3 > SMB3 > MIM > SMRPG > SM64 = OoT (before final battle) > Smash Bros > OoT (ending) *SPLIT*

1. OoT+7 > PM > LM > SMS > PM2 > SS > PiT (present) > SPP > NSMB > SMG > WW > etc.

2. PM > LM > SMS > PM2 > SS > PiT (present) > SPP > NSMB > SMG > TP > etc.

Mario games are in red.
Illuminated forgot the order of the Gameboy games, so they weren't included.

God damn I must be bored.

Faceless, you just won the persistence award for your contribution to this thread. Didn't imagine anyone would ever pull this off. Great job.

I don't think the SSB games should be in here either. They basically "smash" (get it? ) every Nintendo-related character into one game.

It's right between OoT (before final battle) and OoT (ending).
I left out the other two on purpose.

Wow, that is so cool. I never thought any games were connected in a timeline. I just thought they were a bunch of random stories!

Sadly I've discovered a massive flaw in my timeline.
Mario has 7 years of inactivity during OoT because of how poorly structured it is.
Given that I'm too lazy to change it, I'm going to say these 7 years are Mario is Missing.
After he's found again (during Adult Link's adventure in OoT) he goes on to have the adventure that is SM64, then immediately goes on to Smash Bros, which Link takes a break from his quest to compete in. Mario then continues on as normal.

Now this, I like. At least *someone* has the right amount of inspiration to pull off this kinda feat. Everyone should take notice.

Y'know, I just realized that a few of these time line theories intersecting has Mario living for a few thousand years.

Which are these? Mine certainly doesn't, and I don't think anyone else attempted to link Mario and Zelda together, which is the only way of establishing Mario within a timeframe.
You can't get any real sense of time from simply organising the Mario games, other than the 30 or so years between YI and the adult Mario adventures.

We do know that Ocarina of Time falls somewhere in the middle of the Mario saga, as the characters' portraits can be found in one of the rooms in Hyrule Castle.
