Discuss anything about the franchise here including the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots coming to PS3. I was about to put this thread under Sony, but I chose to do this thread under multiplatform because the games of the franchise also came out on other consoles besides the ones made by Sony (PS1, PS2, PSP).

List of MGS games I've played:

Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (GBC)
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GCN)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)

I remember briefly playing a demo of the orignal MGS on PS1. My cousin had the full version of the game. The Twin Snakes on GCN was the remake.

Splinter Cell is basically a rip-off from MGS in my eyes. Like you said, it's an American version of MGS.

I started with Twin Snakes a few months ago and since have beaten it and MGS2: Substance. I now know what I've been missing out on; these games are awesome. I've never played a game like them. As for which one I preferred, the initial sequence of MGS2 is amazing, but overall, I like TT better, especially in terms of plot. MGS2's was a little too ambituous, but I still enjoyed it.

I've been holding off on MGS3 since I didn't want to get tired of the series, and I only own Snake Eater (it was my brother's)... I'm pondering whether I should just give in and start Snake Eater or pay for Subsistance, with the new camera system, original MG games, etc.

I probably won't get to play MGS4 for a long, long time. I have no plans to get a PS3 (MGS4 would be the only game I'd want), and if anything, I'll get a 360 later on. Hopefully they'll port it eventually like with Substance, but that's doubtful.

rip off suggests that it was stolen. Perhaps inspired would be a better word. That would be like saying halo ripped off goldeneye. They are two completely different games that happen to be in the same genre of stealth action. However SC has better lighting, better voice acting, better stories, and more realism. Metal Gear Solid's stories are way too anime-ish for my tastes...though some people like that...Personally I'm not a big fan of Japanese stories in games. They tend to not make much sense and the main character or main villian always has to have something strange about them. Some strange power within or a gun for an arm or whatever. I'll stick to the realism stories about nuclear threats and terrorism. The stuff you could actually see happening.

Also to the above...

I don't think its doubtful at all that metal gear 4 will be ported. After all every single metal gear with a number after it has been ported across the board. Even to PC.

MGS is my favorite non-Nintendo franchise.  Yes, that means it's higher than Sonic on my list.

Actually, I wasn't a huge fan of MGS for the PS1 or Twin Snakes for the Cube.  The story in that game was the best of all the games, but the gameplay was...unevolved.  I even played both before playing MGS 2 and 3.  The gameplay was not perfect in 1.

In 2, the gameplay was much improved, but the story fell short of 1's.  I didn't even mind playing as Raiden either, cause he was pretty cool.  I know everyone and their brother hated Raiden, but I didn't mind him.  Plus he's going to rock GotP.

In Snake Eater, the story was superb, and the gameplay was fresh due to the outdoor enviornment.  There was a lot of innovation in thsi game.  The End = Incredibly unique boss battle.  Good last boss battle too.

I'm excited and torn about Guns of the Patriots.  I'm not getting a PS3, it's way too [filtered] expensive.  Not for what you're getting, just in general.  It's too much.  I'll either have to play demos or mooch off of friends(if they end up buying one).

Metal Gear(NES) is another fun game.  Took me an eternity and a half to beat it, but it rocked with that old school charm.

Awesome franchise.  Hope they bring it to the Wii(SSBB doesn't count lol).

Metal Gear Solid 1 + 2 are excellent games, albeit with unevolved and outdated stealth gameplay, as Intas said. The gameplay in Splinter Cell could easily top these two.

MGS3, however, is the perfect evolution of stealth gaming. No cheap radar, no running at full speed without detection, no overly off-the-wall anime kind of story; just pure stealth goodness.

The camoflauge and CQC systems are very intricate gameplay mechanics that are oh-so rewarding once mastered, and they help make this game better than any Splinter Cell.

I've only played The Twin Snakes (and the PS1 VR Training thing, if that counts), but I really enjoyed it. When I get a PS2 after the price drops due to the PS3 release, MGS2 and 3 will be two of the games that I pick up first. I like MGS more than Splinter Cell because it has more of an adventure game feel to it, whereas Splinter Cell went from mission to mission. I haven't played any of the Splinter Cells besides the original, though, so my mind may change on that.

Raiden? I don't really hate him, he's cool. I think there was one reason I don't like about him, but I forgot. Three years has passed since I last played MGS2. Before I got a slim PS2 and MGS3 for Christmas back in 2004, my cousin lets me and my bro borrow his PS2 (the original model before the slim version) and we played the entire game. MGS4, maybe if there's a price drop for the PS3, lower enough so I could afford one, I'll get a chance to play it.

The only reason I didn't like Raiden was because I couldn't play as Snake anymore. I had no idea the player change was coming, so it was extremely disappointing when I found I had played all I could of Solid Snake for the rest of the game. As a character, Raiden was fine, though. I didn't mind him.

TRUST me. Splinter Cell has evolved so much since the original. I can't even play the original. I hate it. It's like crawling after you learned how to walk. Guards spot you even when you are in the dark...the levels are very linear with little extra paths...no extra mission oppertunitys and it is incredably hard to get through without being spotted...if you want a true splinter cell experience play chaos theory...xbox mag gave that game a 9.9 which is the highest rating ever for that mag. The levels have multiple paths. And Sam has a large variety of moves to dispose of guards quickly and quietly. Also I forget...do guards talk to each other in MGS? Cause i think thats one of the best things in SC is that you can listen in on guards having conversations. My favorite is this one from two guards in a 3rd world latin country:

Guard 1: Hey have you heard about our new security system?
Guard 2: No...what is it?
Guard 1: We have lights that turn on automatically when someone walks by.
Guard 2: That...that is amazing!
Guard 1: I know!
Guard 2: I should get one of those for my garage! Imagine! You pull up in your car and the lights turn on automatically for you and light up your driveway!
Guard 1: You're crazy! This is high tech stuff. It probably costs millions of dollars.
Guard 2: You are probably right. What was I thinking?

No, I don't think so. I think the only times when they interact with each other is like when one lies on the ground and the other wakes him up if sleeping. If you're spotted,  they call for back-up and more guards show up and try to shoot you. Maybe they have conversations during certain cut-scenes, but I don't know, I forgot already.
