A full $100 price cut?! That changes things!! ... Not. Could this be Sony's Dreamcast? Maybe now they'll finally go down.
Hehe, this is something I've been thinking for quite some time, but strangely enough, it's not exactly what I would wish for Sony, though I definitely didn't wish it for SEGA, even though they, at the time, were the number one rival for Nintendo, and after all is said and done I ended up actually missing them, as they were the only ones you could compare to Nintendo. PS & Xbox are much more for "the masses", which I let you all decide upon exactly what those are

Wow...I wasn't really doing it as a comparision with depth. Sega's last system was Dreamcast am I correct? I guess I should have said this instead: "Could this be Sony's last system? Sega was a big part of the gaming community and no one expected it to just flop. Sony is big now and though I've had suspicions if this would be their last system, but I wasn't sure. It just seems odd that Sony seems so desperate (or at least to me they seem to be.). Maybe they will fall out like Sega. That was all I meant to say Face. I could edit if it pisses you off... (Everyone here is so moody. : )

Moody? I'm not pissed off. @HS: Er... the Wii is for the masses, and by the time of the Dreamcast, Sony was Nintendo's new rival. I don't even know how Microsoft fits in to the whole equation. It seems Microsoft consider Sony to be their rivals, Nintendo fans hate Sony, and Sony doesn't have an opinion on either competitor because they're focused solely on themselves. Or at least that was the case last gen. This gen Nintendo seem to have taken Sony's place, but Microsoft and Sony are still dismissive of Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft seem to have a true rivalry this time around.

Yeah, Sega just produced games. Sony produces games, digital cameras, TVs, all sorts of electronics. They're a much bigger industry than Sega was.

Yes, well, I could care less about all of their technological items, as far as the gaming industry is concerned Sony will always <<< SEGA. Which is a lot, coming from a Nintendo fanboy. SEGA has managed to deliver a great deal of original titles back in its days, and even if now it's only producing games (with few standing out), overal SEGA deserves more respect for what it has been in the past, than Sony who will never have so much bragging rights (unless they somehow manage to steal the number one spot again AND make some profits with their PS3 and PSP "Slim"...)

HS all where saying is sony has more reasources to keep its consel alive then sega did. When the dreamcast was falling sega had no other money to invest in it. Sony has money and resources from all those fields.

yeah, but if Sony makes a major loss in the gaming department, then they will pull out as they have the other departments, such as TVs, cameras, phones etc.

yeah, but if Sony makes a major loss in the gaming department... I still can't believe $2 Billion doesn't count as a major loss... God bless "the grand scheme of things", eh? I still don't understand why any serious company in their right mind would want to deliberately go out with a product which would sell at a loss on every unit- and such a big one in Sony's case- from Day One. Everything I was taught about good business sense is a sham! ..., then they will pull out as they have the other departments, such as TVs, cameras, phones etc. Once they've pulled every single trick possible like falsely indicating that they'd be returning to a 2 SKU (a term I thought I'd never use, but am stuck for another word atm) strategy?

Alright, we're going to Jordan's School For Business 101:
The goal of a company is to make a profit. To make a profit, you have to take in more than you're spending. If profits are down, the companies value typically goes down, if the value goes down the stockholders become agitated and sell their stock, and those that have a lot in the company, will try to affect a change. Stockholders vote in a board of trustees, they have one obligation, to chose a President for the company, everything goes down from there.
Sony is a multinational conglomerate, their revenue is vast and their net worth is no doubt in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Last year, Sony's net income(profit) last year was $14.578 billion, their revenue was $63.980 billion. There's a LOT of operating costs in there. It's the President's job to make sure that profits are maximized, if a division isn't cutting the mustard, changes are made from the top, otherwise the President risks getting booted out. Which was the case with Ken Kutaragi. If the division proves too costly to operate, it's imperative for the President to make changes, and if those changes don't work, the division itself might get cut.
Of course, there's a associated value to the SCE, even if profits are down this year it doesn't mean they won't come up. If they're low enough for too long though, it's entirely possible that either serious changes will get made or that the division will be dissolved. I don't suspect that'll happen, at least not for a while, but I think if they keep on this course, yeah it could be in the cards.

Grand. Theft. Auto. 4.
I'm not sure if it's an exclusive, but thousands of GTA fans out ther may well buy a PS3 for that game, whichl ooks pretty good.
GTAIV should be ported to Wii. I really could see it working quite well actually, especially with the Wii control system.

GTA IV is indeed a multi-platform game. A 360 version of the game will be launched alongside the PS3 version sometime next year. That said, I don't think that the game will sell too well on the PS3, as I think a lot of people who own both systems will opt for the 360 version. Microsoft paid a hefty sum of money (~50 million I think) to introduce exclusive episodic content to the 360 version of the game via the XBOXLIVE marketplace. Also, many developers (the most notable being Ubisoft-the developers behind Assassin's Creed) have said time and time again that the 360's architecture allows for better Artificial Intelligence than the PS3. Based on what I've read in EGM, the AI will be exceptionally detailed in this game. For these reasons, I think there's really no incentive to buy this game on the PS3 unless it's your only system.
As for the Wii version, I don't know how it would work out, and I don't think it will ever happen. I wouldn't count out a spin-off or a Wii-exclusive entry in the future though.

Another point I've just thought of:
It's been 5 months since the PS3 was released. Console wars usully last around 5 years or so. People who say the PS3 has failed arent really lookign into the future much.
AS for GTAIV on the Wii. You could use the Nunchuk to move, the Wiimote to aim, and then turn it on its side when you enter a vechile. I would be slighty unwieldy, but with guns youd get precision aiming, which has been a problem with the entire series since GTA3, apart from on the PC.
However it might tarnish the "family" aim that Nintendo seems to be marketing the Wii at.

Resident Evil 4, Scarface, The Godfather, Manhunt 2, No More Heroes... Family my backside. So bored of hearing that one. Anyway, I didn't want to see this thread kicked again but felt that point had to be tidied up.

Well... even if they had the best games for it, I'd say a game system for 700 bucks isn't worth it at all. I'd rather buy me some Wii games and a new computer

I'm so torn . . . Recent events in my life have indicated that I may have a fair bit more money to throw around before too long, and I feel the time may be coming where I am finally enabled to purchase an HDTV and at least one non-Wii videogame system--either the PS3 or Xbox 360. The problem is: I am, and have always been horribly indecisive. And the PS3 and Xbox 360 have many drawing points and weaknesses. I've considered getting a 360, mostly because Halo 3 (which looks AMAZING on HDTVs) just came out and there's a slew of other games and features that make the system a very worthwhile purchase. But then there's the PS3 . . . though not really worth it at this point, as we've all discussed in this topic, it still has the potential for exclusivity with at least 3 games that I must play: God Of War III, MGS4, and FFXIII. Yes, it has been thrown around for a long time that the latter two could make their way to 360 at some point, but right now it seems that Konami and Square Enix are content with being extremely stubborn (or being in severe denial) as they simply ignore PS3's dismal sales. Now, if indeed PS3 will remain the only place I can get those three games, then I may just have to get one. EDIT: And, I'd have to buy one before the 60GB editions sell out, as those have the Emotion Engine hardware-based backwards compatibility. But on the other hand, God knows when any of those games will be out . . . this really is a tough choice. And no, getting both is not an option--that's just ridiculous.

I uh...ahem...bought a PS3...not too long after it hit the $500 mark (where i got a huge discount from buying it at my work).
Gotta say...even though I only bought one game for it so far...not really so disappointed. MGS4 and DMC4 will be out by near begining of next year (arriving just as I've played through Wii's "Big Three")...so...yeah, and I still got the backwards compatability. Plus it looks nice on my HDTV.
So, yeah...its okay. Still spend more time on my Wii...but the PS3 is there now.
