Depends on what your needs are. If you want a nice blu-ray player to go with your HD TV then yeah it is an excellent buy. But if it's just for gaming you might want to wait. I think once some good games start coming out for the system it might actually be worth it in the long run.

However the needs for most gamers would probably just as easily be solved with the 200 dollar cheaper xbox360 and to an even more extent if you used that 200 dollars you saved toward the purchase of a wii. Then you have yourself all you really need as a gamer.

I'd say not now and not ever.  I think that $400's too much to spend on a game system, $600's right out.

The way PS3 exclusives are slipping away, the good games Bill forsees for the console could easily be available on the more worthy Wii60 combo. If you give a hoot about BluRay, go for the PS3 by all means. But the PS3 just stinks of style over substance to me, while the Wii and 360 can carry off both beautifully together.

Disclaimer: I only own a Wii due to my Nintendo-loving ways and lack of funding, but have seen some good things from the 360. It's starting to scare me that I may truly fall for it one day... :-P

I'll break this down in two distinct aspects, for all 3 systems:

Price:
PS3-the PS3 is valued around 800-840 dollars, depending on which version you buy:
http://www.playfuls.com/news_06601_PS3s_European_Launch_to_Reignite_the_Battle_of_Gaming_Consoles.html
Overall, it's one of the best deals out there, and certainly is worth the money.

360-Depending on where you get your information, the 360 is worth anywhere from 600-715 dollars:
http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/28/xbox-360-costs-715-to-make/
Another excellent deal in terms of what you're getting.

Wii-The Wii sells for just 250......but analysts and stat sheets show that the manufacturing price is just 158-200 dollars;
http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/15/wii-manufacturing-costs-ring-up-to-just-158/
Overall, NO in terms of price. There's no sugar-coating it. This makes it the worst of the 3 deals.

Overall Value(Fun/Replayablility/etc.)

DISCLAIMER: Okay, here's where my personal gaming expertise will come into play. . I've managed to play a good deal of each system. These following reviews reflect the experience that I've had with each.

PS3- The Ps3's heavy hitters right now are Motorstorm and Resistance. The Ps3 also boasts an enormous amount of quality multiplatform games as well. The PS3 also has a wide range of upcoming games as well, including lair, Ratchet and Clank Future:Tools of destruction, Warhawk, Killzone, MGS4, GoW3, FF13, and Heavenly Sword. Some sources say some of these may be out in September (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6168749.html). I'm not sure about the exclusivity claims in the link though. I guess I'll wait there. Also recall that HOME and Littlebig planet are two excellent additions to the system. HOME, in particular, beats out any equivalent on another system.

The PS3 boasts incredible high-definition visuals, and has good online play. In my experience with PSN, I've never lagged or been booted from a match (a feat which is pretty remarkable). It's an excellent online service, and will probobly be the 2nd best we'll see this generation. Overall, it's definitely worth the money. Heck, I'm going to buy a 2nd one pretty soon!

360- The 360 Boasts the best library available in the present, as well as a strong line up in the future. At the present time you can pick up Gears of War and Lost Planet. The 360 also has strong multiplatforms that it shares with the PS3, which include R6V and Oblivion. Without a doubt, the strongest feature of the system is its online play, which is superior in every way to the competition. I'm not going to stretch this out any further than I have to- The 360 is currently the best system available. I'm going to buy a 2nd 360 (an elite version) as soon as possible.

Wii- The Wii entered the Console race without a quality lineup (much like the other systems). The only must-buy game at lauch was TP, which ended up being a bust (imho of course). Personally, I played very little Wii after Christmas time, because I got bored after playing it. My friends found the same thing when they played the system as well. The Wii does have some quality games coming out, including SSBB, Galaxy, Corruption, and Dragon Quest. Unfortunately, there aren't many multiplatform games on the system, which isn't cool. Despite not having the future lineup of the other two systems, the Wii has a noteable array of unique features

The most prominent "exclusive" feature is the Virtual Console. I'm not really a fan of this myself, as I own every Nintendo console along with their notable games. For the average gamer, however, this is HUGE. The 360 and PS3 don't have full backwards compatibility for their LAST GENERATION games alone. Without a doubt, this is the system's bread and butter in terms of features. Despite having a motion sensing remote, it sometimes acts as a hinderance (see Red Steel). This is why I tend not to glorify the feature. Overall, I do think the Wii will have the best gameplay in the future, which is a big plus. The Miis are cool as well, but they're overshadowed by Sony's HOME.

The only two other negatives are the graphics (which are archaic compared to PS360) and the online play (which is non-existant). I think that by the end of the console cycle the Wii will look as good as 1st generation 360 games, which is sufficiant. I believe that the Wii online play will be sufficient, and just a few steps behind PSN. Again, it really doesn't matter where each system's online play ranks....it's never going to be as good as XBL this generation. Overall, it's definitely worth the money as well.

EDIT: Already bought a 2nd Wii. My mother wanted one for mother's Day, so I went and got one for her.

So there you go. All three systems are worth the money. Note that this is my opinion. You can't take anyone's opinion (MINE INCLUDED) at face value. Play for yourself and see what you like.

At the moment for a gamer I think the 360 is the best deal. It's got the longest list of exclusives and the longest list of upcoming exclusives and it is still available at a decent price. Nintendo might be the cheapest but at the moment it has very little to show and very little lined up to show other then the top nintendo franchises which can only support my needs as a gamer for so long.

The biggest problem with the PS3 is it's just TOO advanced for todays age. They are a bit ahead of the curve for the average consumer. I think a system like the ps3 might thrive in a years or two. I think they kinda rushed putting the blu-ray on the market. It's just too advanced of a medium to be used on games just yet. The current blu-ray drives in the ps3 read the games too slow and there has been and will be loading issues futher down the road for high end ps3 games. That's why I like how Microsoft has the HD-dvd drive seperate. It's a beautiful medium for HD movies (both HD-DVD and Blu-ray) but we aren't where we should be to be releasing games on them just yet. Hopefully Sony will update their blu-ray drives when the technology catches up with their system.

I think in about a year a ps3 will be a worthy purchase because not only will more games be available by then but you will be more likely to own an HDTV by then. I will most likely get it some time in 2008.

Once I found out that Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5 where heading out to 360, I knew I had no reason for PS3.

So it looks like in the near future I'll be a proud Wii60 owner.

I think it's too expansive for a console... Hell you can get a computer for that price! I would never spend that much for a console... Or maybe I think that way because I don't have much money to throw away...

Wait, this wasn't a thread about L'Oréal.? I'm disappointed. (Because I'm worth it...)

Anyways, no it is not worth the price. $600 is an outrageous price for a console which doesn't even have that many exclusive titles. I'd rather spend my money on something else, on something more sensible.

It's worth your money, but is it a smart buy?

If you have the money, why not.

Because the system's on shaky ground and your money might be better spent on something else?

Now learning that Virtua Fighter 5 is headed for a 360 release, I have even less reason for a PS3. Yipee.

Turns out I have a friend who's been hiding in the closet, waiting for the PS3 to become "worth it". Why? VF5 and MGS.

This bit of news is my first step towards breaking him, Illuminated. Many thanks.

This is/was one of thier last 2 remaining exclussive 3rd Party titles that people actually care about.

I'd have to say Yes as a Blu-ray player.
No as a games system.
And the first is only if Blu-ray wins the format war against HD-DVD and thats dubious seeing sony's track history when it comes to media formats.
Betamax anyone?
I say no as a games system simply because I want to know that there will be at least 5 games I'll play on it, and at the moment I haven't seen any I'd go out and buy, some that may come out later on it such as FFXIII may tempt me or possibly MGS4.
But thats still only 2 games.
And if FFXIII goes Xbox360, sony won't get a penny off me this gen.

No, its not*uses sarcastic tone*

Nintendo just randomly makes a remote/nunchuk controller that pwns, has motion sensing in it, has a list of games that most people in the gaming community would die to play and you can download classics such a Mario 64 straight to the system.

Hardly a revolution eh? *sarcastic tone used again*
