GameTrailers have taken a big ol' can of petrol and decided to throw it over the flames of Fanboyism... Presenting, The Top 10 Consoles ... Of All Time. The list looks a little something like this:

10- Sega Dreamcast, 9- Atari 2600, 8- GameBoy, 7- Nintendo 64, 6- Sega Genesis, 5- GameBoy Advance, 4- Playstation 2, 3- NES, 2- SNES, 1- Playstation

Personally, I'd have put the SNES at #1, the letters "SP" at the end of #5 to justify its position above #8, and put the PS2 higher than the PSOne. Ignoring the DS seems a little bit foolish as well.

Ok... EA's Top Ten: 10- Atari 2600, 9- Sega Genesis, 8- Sega Dreamcast, 7- GameBoy, 6- Playstation, 5- Nintendo DS, 4- NES, 3- N64, 2- Playstation 2 , 1- SNES. (And that's as unbiased as you may ever see me get. PS2 > N64? Cherish this moment.)

And the Gamecube was definitely hiding at #11 in both those lists...

As much as I hate the Playstation, I think GT's decision to give it the number one spot was the right one. Afterall, it was the Playstation that really popularised video-games and changed their whole 'kiddy' image, for better or worse.

Still, I guess Nintendo fanboys can take heart in the fact that the Playstation was basically a SNES-CD.

That was definitely a good list. But I think the Ps2 comes before the NES, despite what it (the NES) did for gaming.

My list goes something like this:

1.) Playstation (no debating this)
2.) SNES*
3.) Playstation 2*
4.) NES
5.) Sega Genesis
6.) N64
7.) GBA
8.) Sega Dreamcast
9.) GB
10.) Atari 2600

*Interchangeable

Those are based on my experience playing them all. I'm not a big fan of handhelds (as you probobly deduced from my list). Usually, the sound quality is substandard (see GBA) and they have too many ports. Overall, it was a very well done list.

And the Gamecube was definitely hiding at #11 in both those lists

I lol'd

Xbox and xbox360 are so underrated for what they have done for the industry...

Which system set the bar for online gameplay? Xbox.

Which system introduced LAN play? Xbox.

Which system introduced downloadable content and games that could be updated after purchase? Xbox

Which system introduced Virtual-Console-only-better style downloadable games? Xbox360

Which system introduced a home opperating system launch screen to organize games into one giant central hub? Xbox360

Which system introduced achievements to raise replay value of every game on it? Xbox360.

Microsoft has come up with several wonderful ideas that will affect the game industry in the future and no one seems to give microsoft credit for it. All they can say it "Xbox only has Halo"

I'm not gonna pretend I can give an objective "Top 10 Consoles", so I'll just post my very own 10 favorite ones if that's alright with you threadmasters.

1) N64: my best ever gaming times.  Undying love.
2) Gameboy: don't underestimate the Power of the Handheld!
2) NES: the groundbreaking stuff and Nintendo's rise.
3) GC: my biggest collection beside my GB collection.  Some very sweet titles in there.
4) SNES: haven't played as much games on the Super than I'd like to, otherwise I would have had to rank it either...  I know well what it did for Ninty and... us ^^
5) GBA: boy does it have a lot of sweet titles...
6) Sega Saturn: Nights & Saturn Bomberman.  'Nuff said.
7) PS2: running out of consoles, really...  No honestly: the PS2 has many games.  Though I deem the average quality much lower than what Ninty has to offer, it still ranks high on the Scale O' Fun.
8] GBC: not that influential maybe, but still a few good uns...

That's about it I'm afraid...

Which system set the bar for online gameplay? Xbox.

It set the bar for itself, not other companies.  Sega's service was free, Nintendo's service is free, Sony's service is free.  Microsoft is the only system

Which system introduced LAN play? Xbox.

Again, untrue, Dreamcast had LAN games.

Which system introduced downloadable content and games that could be updated after purchase? Xbox

Again, untrue, Dreamcast had downloadable content for games, of a smaller scale of course but it did have downloadable games.

Which system introduced Virtual-Console-only-better style downloadable games? Xbox360

I'll give it that it does have original titles and updated classics, but I prefer the selection the virtual console offers/will offer.

Which system introduced a home opperating system launch screen to organize games into one giant central hub? Xbox360

I think that's a terrible idea for consoles, makes them too PC. I barely even like it in the Wii, I wish there were some way to make it defualt to play games ala DS, but that's the way it goes.  And, if you want to get technical, the DS went into an OS before it started playing games, and if I'm not mistaken, PS2 always prompts you if you want to go into options or play the game.

Which system introduced achievements to raise replay value of every game on it? Xbox360.

Which system's also repsonsible for over-priced micotransactions?

Microsoft has come up with several wonderful ideas that will affect the game industry in the future and no one seems to give microsoft credit for it.

Basically, everything you said had been done before it, Microsoft just made better use of it because it attached a hard drive to system.  If anything, I blame Microsoft for the PC-ifcation of the game system.  It's kind of annoying.

I don't have a list of my top 10 consoles and I have never even thought of such a thing.

However, looking at other people's lists one question occurs to me. Many are willing to place SNES and Playstation 1 quite high on their lists.

So my question is: "What kind of an über-machine would we have had if Nintendo hadn't ditched Sony back in the early 90s?"

(Sorry if this is a bit off topic but I really had to ask this...)

Playstation? No defintly not. It was defintly the SNES. I have never owned one but I read enough about games to apperciate this console. The first time I heard of this was when my mom let me play Secret of Mana on her old SNES. I had sooooo much fun playing that!(must get VIRTUAL CONSOLE!) And there were other great titles like Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy and the widley acclamied Chrono Trigger. I have heard nothing that great from Playstation to recognize it.

Even though I dislike sony, I agree that playstation should be number 1. As others have stated, it really brought gaming to the mainstream market. It also used CD's rather than cartridges, an idea that nintendo had yet to catch onto at the time.
Maddy, you've said you never owned a snes, and i suspect you never owned a playstation either. No good games on playstation!? How about Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider or Grand Theft Auto? Most of these not only were great games, but also pushed the boundries of gaming, something that nintendo games failed to do.

Nintendo had caught onto it, Sony made the Playstation following a SNES-CD addon plan which never came into fruition. Of course, said project also resulted in the God awful CD-i from Philips... Sony worked it out quite well.

No good games on playstation!? How about Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider or Grand Theft Auto?

All of which went or have at least now gone multiplatform?

Most of these not only were great games, but also pushed the boundries of gaming, something that nintendo games failed to do.
Nintendo games not pushing boundaries? I'll pretend I didn't see that...

And finally...

I had sooooo much fun playing that!

Ever considered a career as an American High School cheerleader? I can picture you in a cafeteria talking about that guy who is soooooo hot... Elongated vowels suck.

The Playstation Wii?

I don't know, something tells me the fracture was bound to happen. And that's not a bad thing per se now is it?  Even for you Sony bashers out there (you know who you are ) it should be clear that competition = good.

To open up that argument: if there had never been war, there had never been the internet (well, not so soon anyway), and many other technological advancements (thing aircraft, computer technology, domotics...)

One party learns from the other, and tries to improve.  If you were running a monopoly, would you really care about sales?  It's not like anyone else could steal your shine...  So sales-driven economy = good.  Ultimately leads to perfected/advanced technologies and the best of both worlds...

Hmmm...I don't know about that. HS's suggestion of a Playstation Wii made me drool a bit!--er, figuratively speaking of course.
