Well said. I didn't mean to subsume Jack Thompson under the media, I guess it came out wrong if it was interpreted that way. Psychological instability can be very confusing and the "doctors" can do their best to determine what caused it or why it happened, but sometimes they just can't figure it out. So, many of them usually blame it on exposure to a lot of violence in TV, movies, etc.or similar activities. I'm going to have to agree with you that these mental disorders don't come from leisure like activities such as video games and the most likely cause is yes from seeing people get beat up(not necessarily in the physical way), seeing their loved ones hurt, and at one point it just might be too much for their minds to bare and they just snap. As you said these cases are usually brought about by some catalyst, traumatization, etc.

You also have a point in you saying the media tries to define them and yes they should stop because it isn't an easy thing to define them.

Good viewpoint HS.

Turns out Seung-Hui was not using Counter Strike to master his deadly killing skills. Jack Thompsons next target should be... Rubber Ducks!

Quote from: The Sun
CAMPUS killer Cho Seung-Hui bought 36 rubber DUCKS on eBay, it was revealed last night.

Evil Cho, 23, paid £15 for them on the internet auction site — possibly to use as TARGET PRACTICE.

...

Cho bought the ducks from an Illinois bath accessories dealer last year using his eBay name blazers5505.

He also bought spare ammo clips on the site two weeks before the killings. Cho had a hitlist of the pupils who bullied him. Students knew of it but did not see Cho as a threat.

This kid was beyond help...

Rubber ducks... That's odd...

Wait! Weren't there rubber ducks in Sony's tech demo! Maybe Sony is to blame for the shooting... Now there's a target for Jack Thompson!

I wouldn't object to that at all...

No. Can't do it. Thompson can't pin this on video games, try as he might, and even I can't let it fall on Sony's shoulders. The fact is this kid was the full hamper short of a picnic and his actions were the result of a blown fuse/loose screw.

That is all.

You are absolutely right. And I was just kidding.

It just isn't right to blame everything on video games. I always die a little inside when I see Thompson make such comments...

As do I

We have rights too!  We should not be discriminated against like some tragic minority group!

But sadly many people still hold by the stereotypical views on gamers, which, for some, seem to include tendency toward aggression, whereas I know NO one in my gamer friends who is even prone to be aggressive...

In that respect, I have written an exposé rant on that before, I'd like to point out that me, and many people like me, really enjoy violent games (FPS, TPS, GTA,...), yet I am one of the most pacifist people out there...

When you are a sane person (relatively speaking *cough*), you can make the distinction between "real" world and "Imaginary" world/the world of Dreams, Fiction, Movies, Games,...

When you are not a sane person, or at least likely to your sanity - even if that be only at certain [physically or usually definitely psychologically provoked] moments, in which ANY exposure of violence coming from either the "real" world or the world of fiction can be used as inspiration to commit some sort of felony.

BUT, and this is a big but (haha, stop laughing), people do NOT need to have seen or actively played videogames to know about evil.  Nor do they have to have seen violent action movies.  Everyone is capable of "snapping", and everyone is able to kill someone.  Though you could enforce/kindle certain action patterns, you cannot create them solely on the basis of one's experiences, which coincidentally are - statistically proven - MUCH more real-world based than fiction-based, and if not, the kinds of fictionalised violence that could really have an impact is, also, one's own dreams/phantasies, with which we have gone full circle and have ended up back at the psychological background of someone who snapped or is likely to.

Thus ends my rant.

I feel like a n00b and I now this is off topic but who exactly is Jack Thompson?  I've heard of him but not in detail.

I've been out of the gaming loop since March I'd say.

You've been out the loop for longer than March, my friend...

Jack Thompson is a lawyer, which already speaks volumes about his personality. He is typically the name which you will hear when video games are being lobbied against, and has been since the mid-nineties.

Thompson had earlier campaigned against rap music and Janet Reno. I state this last obscure detail because early in the 90s, he was asked to complete a psychiatric examination. Somehow, he passed, and continues to bring this up whenever he is being called a "raving mother fucking loon". Which is more often than most of us blink.

Thompson has singled out titles such as Doom, Halo, Resident Evil and Counterstrike as gun simulators, and frequently tries to use them as the reasoning behind some psycho teen's killing spree. Thompson once tried to sue Wal-Mart, Take Two and Sony for $250 million when two boys claimed they were inspired in their violent ways by GTA II.

The case was dismissed, much like countless others of Thompson's since.

It was posted earlier, but follow this link to read some of Thompson's "classic" lines...

EDIT: Can this be the last we hear of Thompson, at the very least in this thread? We have an existing JT thread and I think it would be a shame if this thread were to get lost in this man's drivel.

Moving on from that arsehat...

Still looking for a scapegoat? The American media sure go crazy when they get a massacre. No-one is safe from the blame.
