I thought it would be great to see a forum where people can ask this question and get a reply before having to spend money on the game

Well I'm gonna start it off...

I need help with the following, I am currently using Windows Vista Home Basic, and i hate it, but thats not the problem. I'm going to downgrade to XP Pro, and need to know if this game which doesn't work for me now is stopped by Vista or my hardware.

The game is Neverwinter Nights, and heres my specs:

Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop
Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2080 Processor (1.73GHz,  533MHz,  1MB  L2 Cache)
1024MB  533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM  memory
Intel Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory
60GB SATA Hard Drive
and a Fixed Internal 8x DVD+/-RM Drive

Help would be greatly appreciated, as it works on another Laptop we have, but will it work here?  ???

Well, I'm not much of a computer specs person, but one thing I do know, is that Vista has had a reputation of not working with a lot of games and programs, so it is very likely that Vista is the issue, but you might want to wait for someone else to post with more computer knowledge than I.

Just remembered this doo-dad that I used on my laptop to see if Bioshock would run for me. The results were depressing.

I'm no expert on these things, but it's got "Neverwinter Nights 2" on the list of games if that's what you're after. Hope it may help.

That Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2?  If it's the first, then it should work out fine as far as memory and getting the game to run smoothly goes, but I recall that a friend of mine had issues getting it to work on Vista.  Don't know if that's a common issue or just some bug in his computer (and, hey, it got fried when he tried to partition the HD to install XP, so I guess that's possible), but that's what you get for listening to anecdotal evidence.

If it's NWN2, I'd imagine you could most likely still run the game just fine if you turned down the settings a bit.  Don't know if NWN2 has issues with Vista or not.

Yeh its Neverwinter Nights 1. I always loved that game, and did get it to install on Vista once. Thought it might finally work, but I'm one to only use the toolset. And what do have it... No screen when i open it, then I get that annoying 'Neverwinter Nights has stopped responding and has been closed'.  Grrrr

And before you ask, I tried the actuall game aswell, but same problem. I uninstalled it, than about 1 week ago, thought I'll try it again in compatibility mode and tune down the video settings. This time it won't even install!

As for the HD death, i'll keep a note of that, but I'm not doing this by myself, I'm being helped by my unc who's like a computer whizz. If anyone else can help with the downgrade or information about the game, please do

don't you mean upgrade considering the problems with vista.

Neverwinter Nights should work, because it worked on my old computer which was lower spec than yours

It's due to Vista not supporting particular drivers that make it impossible for the game to run. I don't know if it's fixed yet but that's the problem.

It should work with XP.

my vista (laptop) not only crashes when playing certain games but BSODs when installing some aswell, which I didn't think it would considering it is the "next generation" of operating system

And i think its likely that some games will start to cut off XP compatibility eventually, but that will be a while away...i say this coz many games don't play on 2000 anymore...eg:AOE 3...
