So...I'm listening to the radio. National Public Radio (Aka liberal bull**** radio to conservatives)

Anyhoo I was listening to a show called "World Have Your Say" and they were doing a live show from the netherlands. For those who don't know what World Have Your Say is it is a show where they debate issues from all over the world. One of the issues in the netherlands is they want to ban burkas. If you don't know what a burka is it is the traditional getup for muslim women.

That would be the one right there.

The supporters say not only is it a security threat because you cannot see their face but it also symbolizes years of women oppression in the muslim culture and they want muslim women to be more open to the dutch culture. The neighsayers say it goes against the freedoms that the dutch people have been so proud to hold in their country.

What are your opinions. What if they tried to ban burka's here. How would you feel?

I say keep them. Nay, enforce them. It hides the ugly.

Start getting American women (the ugly ones) to wear them too. Help out my freedom not to have to look at you if you're ugly.

Honda's men are no longer Street Fighters. They see this as a Mortal Kombat, and they have the Killer Instinct. If you do not help your friends, this may be their Final Fight. . . Clayfighter.

I don't see how banning something is helping freedom. People should be able to wear a burka if they want.

Continueing on..

It's not really a matter of safety and oppression. The first is total bull**** because anyone can hide his face if he wanted to without a burka, but the latter is a good point. What it really is about though, is integration. The fact that the majority of Muslims refuse to integrate into our country is pissing our Minister Verdonk, and most of our people off. Wearing burka's doesn't help this problem so they want to ban it in order to help integration among Muslims.

This is morally and legally impossible because let's be honest here, you can't tell someone what to wear or what not to wear.

On the other hand, by wearing a burka, you distance yourself from the rest of the community, which in turn, helps integration in a negative way. Not only that, but some wear it at job interviews, which scares employers off.
Let's not forget that it looks utterly silly aswell.

Although there was a same problem with the headgear of Muslim women, that they claimed to wear for religous purposes. They tried to forbid those in public places like schools but failed.

Although, for some reason, the French managed to ban the headgear without planes crashing into buildings. The weird thing is is that no one really thinks it is wrong or atleast stopped protesting or causing riots.

I myself think they should enforce this because it's beneficial for everybody and is merely a sign of female oppression in the Muslim community.

Ya know funnily enough the UK is having similar debates over the same thing with the same stupid safety reasons.
However I can't even understand the integration side of it in reality, you can still talk to a woman if she's wearing a Burka, and you can talk to one without, the problem with the integration especially with the Netherlands is the culture shock side of it, so many people from Islamic country's move to the West for Freedom, then get there and say "WTF you allow Homosexuality, TOO FREE", etc etc etc, definitely from my experience not all, but some.
And well the Netherlands is the European beacon of liberalism, so it's even more of a deal there.
However another side of the debate pro banning them (at least here anyway) is (I know oppression is one of them, but most Muslim women would actually say they wear them with pride, so I call bull****.) Is the hypocrisy that is happening across the Globe.
A BA (British Airways) was recently fired for wearing a crucifix around her neck as it breached the Dress code, she thinks this is hypocritical as a Muslim woman was allowed to wear a Burka etc, and I in fact agree, and BA has made a **** up.
Yet again I see this as an utterly bull**** excuse, for banning Burka's, instead they should let this woman wear her bloody cross.

If you're going to ban Burka's ban crosses, Turbans, Kippurs, because everyone who's not a member of that religion won't like it?, Stupid, keep them all ****ing legal.

However on the integration issue I want to put this forward, without a Burka will they want to talk to you more or hate you for suppressing them?
Without a Burka will you forget they're Muslim and remove your stereotypes? (The main reason why integration fails).
Does a piece of clothing being removed actually remove their culture, and does it remove yours? They're still going to clash.

Hah.  You wish.  National Public Radio.

I don't know about other countries, but freedom of religion/expression, plus cries of Big Brother when the state bans a piece of clothing, mean it can never happen.

And I don't think it should happen in any other country either.  Businesses can do it, because that's their property and they can have a dress code, but countries shouldn't.
