Where Do We Go From Here
An essay by lil lyon
Edited by Knight
I will be looking at where video games are going and how far they can go.

I look at the Nintendo Wii and think to myself, is this where video games are going? Are motion-sensing controllers the future, or will it be the good old fashion game pad?
Will it be HD graphics and fast processors, or simple graphics and processors that just make the mark?

Where we are
That has been the question in many gamers' minds. However, right know it’s very hard to tell. Not even Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony have the answer to that.
The Wii and the Xbox 360 own the market right now, with the PS3 barely hanging on. Those are facts, but even with that data it’s still hard to tell. The PS3 may be in last because of it’s high price point at $495.22, it’s games or lack thereof, it’s size, it’s power, or heck, even it’s logo. These same variables apply to both the 360 and the Wii. The Wii is supposedly selling because of its easy to use nature, it’s controller, and it’s easy to play games, but is that really the case? It could just be its relatively low cost at $250 U.S, or possibly even all the hype it’s been getting. The 360 is in the middle right now at  $399.99 U.S and was launched one year before its competitors. Although, it has already fallen to second place only seven months after the Wii’s release. Microsoft and Sony thought that more power means better games,  but evidently Nintendo thought differently, (as they always do). They thought that what a game looks like is less important, placing emphasis on how fun a game is. And by the looks of it, they were right.

Where we are going
I am not a fortuneteller; I cannot tell you where we are going. Nevertheless, I do have a theory.
Life after this generation of consoles is going to be interesting. What will the next Wii be like?  Maybe the next generation of consoles will be more like the 360 or PS3, or a combination of all three. Just stop and think about it for a second: the Wii’s controller style, the PS3’s graphics, and the 360’s online -- we're talking the greatest system ever made!
But is that where we are going? Will the jump to next gen really be like that, or will the jump be more of a skip? We still don’t even know who will win the console war. Will more contenders come out of the shadows and rock the gaming world?
Will virtual reality be the next step or is that still to far out of reach? Will more games center around online play, or will games fall back in to the “play alone” style of games of yesterday's year? A lot of people probably think that the Internet is the future of gaming but is that really the case? These questions cannot be answered by businessman, gamer, or industry analysts alike.

My theory
My theory may be a gaming utopia, but I do think it will come to pass.
A gaming world where you have all the things you think a game should have: FPS element, a dash of Action Adventure with some RPG elements, and finish it off with some MMO functionality and you have yourself a very interesting combination. The console that this game would be on would be just as interesting as the game, the controller, the interface, and the functionality. But that is just me, my way of thinking; not yours, nor do I expect it to be.
Say what you will. I am finished and I hope I have provoked thought and left you wondering where do we go from here.

I have a biased opinion on this subject, as do most of you who are reading this.
Please tell me what you think about this subject.

Note from mod: Sorry for the double move, made a mistake on the first one.  Good essay though.

I disagree on the Wii controller style viewpoint.  It is a love it or hate it concept.  Many games choose to offer alternatives to the Wii functionality, such as Tiger Woods (use the nunchuck), Smash bros (4 different ways to control), and MK Armageddon (can use classic or gamecube controller)
