Midna was a show stealer, and a pretty pathetic one at that.  Zelda would be a better series without sidekicks who practically beat the game for you by telling you which buttons to press or where to go.  Not to mention, the hero of the game wasn't Link - essentially it was Midna.  Call me a traditionalist, but I would like to see Link return to the series as an autonomous hero, not an emotionless and brainless automaton.

It seems to me, based on what I've read in this thread, that Midna is one of those characters where you either really like her or you really hate her.  There doesn't seem to be a middle-ground with her.

i think that midna's name in chinease was.......pain in the ass? or somehting like that if not it should be.  i h8d midna, she was nothing but a bitching (srry but could not think of any other words) creature that onlt got in ur way, and made links journey much harder

Well...i agree with the big red NO! Not neccisarily because i hate her, but because she did her thing, played her part, and now she should be left.

She was not a particularly fantastic character as her fans made her out to be but in Zelda terms was quite good. But i did enjoy her role in the story and it was not her fault that Ganodorf was included, really it would have been much better if it was just zant and midna but hey.

That said, She was an aweful domineering assistant who really ruined a lot of puzzles and was just pointlessly vocal i.e "that monkey looks like its beckoning you, lets follow it and see what happens", well duh, there is only one path anyway, so whereever i go i have to follow the monkey unless i go back outside the dungeon for no good reason because i don't want to see what is behind the only door there...

Yeah, for the guy that said no sidekicks, Shin, cmon. Navi was annoying but was okay of a friend for Link. Tatl was pretty cool. Midna I think was greedy but cool.

Shin to the rescue.  I didn't completely hate midna but...meh.  Didn't love her.  She doesn't need to be in the next one.  There's no reason for it.  She helped link, did her thing, now she's gone, woot.  Midna wasn't some fantastic character and it won't kill the series if she's not back.  'Sides, she shattered the mirror, she can't come back. 
As for sidekicks in general...let's see how link fares without one this time round.
