I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with the Stone Tower of Babel theory, and if you haven't, nows the perfect chance to catch up. I'm proud to bring you guys one of the most intriguing Zelda theories out there: The Message of Majora's Mask, by Hylian Dan.

Also, do us a favor and digg it:

Even if you don't read it, digging this article is greatly appreciated.

That was one hell of a read. The level of attention to detail is amazing; must have taken an absolute age to get done. Equally impressive is the idea that Nintendo would actually go through this sort of process with a game's design to add such wonderful depth to it.

Would love to see if there were any other similar examples in the more recent games. They all seemed to have been lacking a certain magical spark that the N64 games had, maybe it's something along these lines.

PS: Dugg it. And I don't Digg very often.

...Wow. I'm impressed. Even if it's not what the designers intended, it's a really nice theory. It would be great if Nintendo took the time to do something like this again with the next game.

After reading that, which incidentally took over 5 hours due to work interruptions, I too am impressed. While I've never heard of the Babel theory, this theory is quite detailed and shows a bit of thought has gone into it. I particularly like the idea of "having faith" being the main message of the game and all the examples used to back it up.

Jesus jumped up Christ, what a read, and what a good find. I dugg it, and I
'm re-reading it now to let the info sink in more.

The way the writer noticed similarities between the Tower of Babel and Stone Tower was excellent. I also noticed one other thing that was also addressed by the writer: The rainbow-like object that appeared above the Clock Tower after Majora was defeated. In the Bible, there is a story about a flood that happened long ago, after which a rainbow appeared to the survivors of the flood (they were among the only believers in God on Earth at that time) as a promise from God that he would never use a flood to destroy the Earth again.

Is it possible that in the game, the designers used this concept to convey the message that the goddesses of the game would never destroy the world of Termina with the Moon again, just like God used the rainbow as a promise to never destroy the real world with a flood again?

I didn't notice the hand pointing upward in Stone Tower until now. Man I feel dumb...

Yeah, I don't really have much to say after reading that, except that I think it's entirely possible that that's what the designers were trying to say.  Man, what a good theory...

Brilliant article - very impressive.  If that wasn't the idea that MM's designers had in mind, it should have been.  I've just recently been playing through MM again and have been realizing that it's a much deeper game than I had originally given it credit for.

I just read it and.....unbelievable. I've never been so moved like this in such a long time. I always knew Majora's Mask was dark, but after reading that, I'm really shocked and at the same time so happy at what Nintendo actually wanted older players to figure out. I also thought the game was only about friendship. But that level of detail in faith is outstanding effort on the Zelda Team.
Majora's Mask always had a place in my heart ever since 4th or 5th grade, and this article has just truly reminded me of how special that game truly is.

I want the old Zelda Team back. These new teams at Nintendo aren't as talented as the older ones.

This was an amazing read and I completely concur with the theory. This is why Majoras Mask is my favourite Zelda game: it had a story and messages OoT couldn't provide. Keeta and I have always thought of theories concerning Ikana, and I'm defiantly settling with this theory now.

The idea of following characters routines, problems and misfortunes and then solving them to witness the final result always touched me. The depth of the characters was amazing, considering how many variations the Kafei-Anju quest had.

I was disappointed MM didn't make the cut in this year Zelda's Definite Review Thread. I'm fairly certain it tallied 3rd overall last year, users aren't trying anymore

I might play through MM again, I'm inspired and it's been awhile. MM will always be in my heart, I’m glad my username inherits the same initials

I hope Python follows the link

Wow.... that was an amazing read, it has made me move majoras mask from my second favorite zelda game to my favorite zelda game (the old favorite was oot of course).

The theory is just so in-depth. I rate it A+++++. (I'll have to create a digg account to digg this.)

It's all in the writing; the story, story-boarding, etc. etc.  I'm an english major and didn't even come close to picking up on any of these (amazing) conclusions.  This just supports more my theory that video games can be, and some are, art.

Its just a theory though...it doesn't really have any full on proof (i only scanned it) most of it is conjecture and finding things in the game that it twists to its way of thinking...things that could be perfectly innocent like the phallic symbols...sometimes things just vaugely resemble penises...its not some conspiracy or secret message...

It was well thought out and written and interesting but at the end of the day you could take many things you find in many games and say that they were trying to do anything...

eg: the ocarina is virgina shaped with lots of holes in it, Hyrule gets desecrated but Link heals each area, curing it of an ailment often by playing the ocarina (filling the holes of the virgina/ocarina)...so sex creates life

that compleatly sucked but i didn't do any research and took 10 seconds literally to think it out. but you can see where i'm coming from?

Most theories are based off of drawing sketchy conclusions.  However, at least this theory makes MM make more sense than it ever did before.  Especially the Stone Tower Temple.  I really liked the theory.

thats what i have a problem with, it doesn't really its just a theory, its just blatant conjecture people are saying things like "it had stories and messages OOT couldn't provide" or "so happy at what Nintendo actually wanted older players to figure out. I also thought the game was only about friendship."

Those quotes weren't anything personal, its just people are giving MM and Nintendo all this praise and credit for some randoms conjecture...

Its not a big deal that this is happening...it just seems silly to me...all it was is a theory well researched but imo read too much into a game...fun and all but...well...look it doesn't matter...i'm just a no fun nancy(i made that one up!!)
