So...surprise announcement at E3 today! I wasn't expecting this, but I'm certainly excited. It's slated for release next year (probably late next year), and it features all new levels and such. And Yoshi's in the game! Debut trailer.Screenshots:

Yea, I kinda saw this coming.. I think this is just gonna be as good as the first one and knowing Nintendo, I don't think they're gonna be cheap and create like.. the same game with yoshi in it or something..
I think Nintendo's gonna develope this game with a full team like they did with 1, which gives us the Mario Galaxy serie with 2 great games.

This was the new Mario game I was hoping for and I am absolutely delighted. Though I've still got to finish the original, it was one of the most beautifully crafted gaming experiences ever made showing that Miyamoto still had that magic about him.
I have no objections to Nintendo reusing elements of past games to produce a sequel - sports game makers do it all the time and no one bats an eyelid. From what Miyamoto was saying at his discussion last night there will be 90% new content present, which makes this anything but a lazy rehash or a rushed expansion.
I hope we get some more original score work for it though. One of the greatest things about Galaxy was its orchestral soundtrack and I'd love to hear some new additions.

From what I hear, that last 10% involves going back to levels from Galaxy for new missions. Which is fine with me--just look at Mario Kart. Half of MKWii consisted of old tracks. Hopefully more cool versions of mario.
There should be. We've already seen two new transformations in NSMBWii; why not Galaxy 2? Some Yoshi transformations would be nice too.

Looks... like SMG with Yoshi. Which in no way is a bad thing when Galaxy was such a great game. And if this new one is even half as good it would still be excellent. (Does that make any sense...?)
I hope they don't call it Super Mario Galaxy 2, though. Replace the '2' with something more original, Nintendo. Pwetty please.

I Think it is partially Nintendo being lazy and doing a rehash or half a sequal but i do not mind this because its a quick release, it has a new feature or two(yoshi, few new mechanics) and its on the same console so what more do you really expect? If this was a new console and this was the "staple" mario game for it's generation then i would be upset...
Its like the equivalent of Majoras mask for Mario Galaxy so i am quite excited, Mario Galaxy was a fantastic game, i hope the same fantastic feel and music is included in the sequal...
hopefully they will fix up the camera issues from the first one and this game will be a bit harder...

I am insanely excited about this.
Galaxy's theme, engine, style etc. worked so I'm glad they're sticking with that -- therefore making an early release much more likely -- and yet most things in the trailer/screenshots look entirely the same as in Galaxy. They seem to have thrown in a lot of new gimmicks, powers, contraptions and themes (snow stage!), and of course there's Yoshi.
This game can't go wrong, and might be almost as good as the original Galaxy, which I thought was the best game of 2008. So this is probably the game I'm looking forward to the most! :3

I didn't think Nintendo would break the trend of only one 3D Mario adventure game per console. It looks really good and nice to see the inclusion of Yoshi. I wouldn't say it’s lazy by Nintendo they have created a good idea and game engine and should capitalize upon it. My only complaint of SMG was that there were no large galaxies. I would like to see one or two the same size as M64.

Looks awesome!! For some reason those dark Mario clones look like those SubSpace monster/robots from Brawl. I forgot what they are called though...

HS, there are no such things as gimmicks in platformers, unless they prevent platforming from occurring (like a sword or a wolf suit or a water backpack). Galaxy should have taught you this. Some of the new platforming ideas in the trailer look even more inventive than anything in Galaxy, and I think it's possible Galaxy 2 could be the more impressive game overall. They aren't relying on any one addition to carry the game, which is great.

I would say that this is just a rehash, but Super Mario Galaxy was built around such an open ended concept that can give birth to so much awesome gameplay. I was not the biggest fan of SM64 (please don't hate me) and I definitely wasn't fond of Super Mario Sunshine. I consider Galaxy to be Nintendo finding Mario some solid ground in 3-D, and I would love much more of it.

I'm thinking that lots of future Nintendo games will be involved with more brawl and SSB things.

I hope not. Brawl's enemies were ridiculously generic. The only thing they share is a cloud of purple smoke around them. I mean, they reminded me of Primids, but they're definitely not the same thing.
Also, this can't be a rehash because Galaxy didn't rely on one single idea (like SMW and Sunshine were with Yoshi/Cape and FLUDD), which means they can't just reuse that idea.

Yeah, I didn't really like them either. I didn't like way you fought them either. I liked Super Mario Galaxy the way it was. The only thing that should be changed is probably adding more sophisticated and fun planets.

After getting really excited for Galaxy 2, I decided to play Galaxy the 1st some more and I had a few thoughts.
-I wonder if Rosalina is going to come back. -I wonder if we'll see the flying ability applied in a proper power star-seeking mission. -Might Luigi play a larger role? (I can't see them doing the "collect all 120 stars again as luigi" thing again) -If 90% of Galaxy 2 is allegedly new content, will they do away with the prankster comet missions and the purple coin missions? (which I didn't like) -Might we be able to actually enter Peach's castle for any purpose rather than just being blocked by some stupid invisible barrier? -Will we get another lighthearted backstory like in Rosalina's library?
One last note, Princess Peach's castle is an immaculately well constructed building. In the final big bang, the airships get shredded, and the comet observatory falls apart, but Peach's Castle actually stays together. How wonderful.

Hopefully so, because I sorta think Luigi is about 16 bits cooler than Mario. I mean he can jump higher and he's stronger and more athletic. Your other ideas that you brought up seemed pretty cool too.

-I wonder if Rosalina is going to come back. I would expect so, since they'll probably need the mechanic of the flying space station to enter the different galaxies from, but at the same time it might be good to slightly change that, and there's of course the risk of having a story that's a complete clone of SMG1. -I wonder if we'll see the flying ability applied in a proper power star-seeking mission. Yes plz. -Might Luigi play a larger role? (I can't see them doing the "collect all 120 stars again as luigi" thing again) I doubt they'll do this but co-up parts would be cool. Maybe make it so you wouldn't need another person (like you could play FSA by yourself by switching between characters), but Mario could go one place to activate some switch/device while Luigi would progress elsewhere. Other than that I expect Luigi to have a minimal role again. Replaying the entire game as L was fun though. -If 90% of Galaxy 2 is allegedly new content, will they do away with the prankster comet missions and the purple coin missions? (which I didn't like) But I loved all of those! Speedrunning is always fun, not getting hurt is a good challenge, only the "enemies/stuff moves faster" ones were pretty lame. I loved the purple coins ones, since they were also timed, and finding them all could be challenging, and I remember the one on the Luigi board in the toys stage with the rotating platforms where you needed to get 100 out of 150 purple coins. That was good stuff. -Might we be able to actually enter Peach's castle for any purpose rather than just being blocked by some stupid invisible barrier? Oh yes. They need to give us Peach's Castle insides. Now.
