There didn't look to be a thread on this, so I've decided to start one. The reason is there are a lot of movies I've seen I love, some I hate, and some I look forward to seeing, and I'd like to see what movies everyone on here is (and isn't) into.

I gotta get this one off my chest and vent for a while about it...I recently watched Paranormal Activity with my brother and a friend of ours'.....it was a complete and utter ripoff. The plot was very slow, and while I could see that there was a great concept to the story, there was barely anything that they implemented into the movie from that concept. Worst of all, the ending was very anti-climactic, and only about 4 minutes of the entire thing were scary (literally, not even 5 minutes of scary material). Maybe it was just all the hype and the final product that let me down, but I was left wanting SO much more when that movie was over.

I've been getting my teeth into the works of Charlie Kaufman recently (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation, etc.) I have a turbulent relationship with his scripts, but that's largely due to my inability to wrap my head around their conclusions as opposed to lack of quality. He really is a clever man. Far too clever.

My favourite so far has to be Being John Malkovich -- it pretty much blew my mind. I'm interested by Synecdoche, New York but I honestly think I'm going to find it too daunting.

Also, Avatar anyone? Personally I thought it was very good. It had some obvious flaws in the story and dialogue, definitely, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it and felt it held enough substance to not degenerate into eye candy. That's about all I can say, really. :)

Paranormal Activity was good, but I understand why some people didn't like it. Some people have bad taste need horror to be much more in-your-face and violent.

Avatar was eye candy. The plot had a few good parts to it, but that's hardly the reason I enjoyed it. Apparently we're getting a sequel?

I saw The Princess and the Frog last week. I miss these types of movies and wish Disney did them more often. Sadly, the box office sales make it look like we won't be getting another very soon. Film goers are disappointing.

And after a much-too-long wait for the movie to be released in my vicinity, I'll finally be seeing The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus tomorrow. I really hope it's worth the wait.

I also saw the princess and the frog, which I agree was a classic disney movie as of a bygone era (the 90s XD).  I also saw up in the air, which was a very cool movie with very mature themes, a lot was going on under the surface and everyone felt very real. It was not campy or cliche at all but rather something uniquely interesting.

I reallly want to see shirlock holmes though, robert downey jr. is awesome.

Most Disney movies have mature undertones or risque easter eggs in them, lol. Check this one out:

I don't understand why people feel the need to insert stuff like that into Disney movies...I mean, really?  Granted, I couldn't really tell that was a naked woman but still.

I'm not even sure I want to see Avatar anymore.  I heard there were some pretty political undertones; like how man messes up the earth by pollution or whatever. I'm honestly just sick of seeing this played over and over again.  Take Wall-E and Over the Hedge: very cute movies but both had the same message- man is wasteful. I'm not saying we aren't wasteful but not to the extreme where it has to been in pretty much every movie that comes out.

I'm with ya on the enviromentalism thing. It's tolerable in avatar, I've gotten used to that. But I really didn't like it's portrayal of the military. There wasn't one second of the movie where the commander wasn't  being a total @$$.
I know some real soldiers personally and that was really uncool. Kind of immature on James Cameron's part.

It's like two frames or something. You can't tell unless you freeze it at the exact right place. I don't really mind because no kid would ever see it.

Don't get me wrong here, I know some soldiers too and they haven't had superior officers like that. However, the stereotypical military prick is recognizable. It makes people say, "Oh hey he must be their superior seeing as he treats them like scum."  It's not the most creative thing ever but it's a fine safety net.

Trust me. If you wait until it's on DVD, you won't really be missing out. It wasn't that great. I'd call it "decent at best."

I genuinely cannot think of a movie where a military commander wasn't being portrayed as an ass. Literally. They're just always done like that. It's not James Cameron, it's the stereotype.

I see your guys's point. It's weird, there's one side of avatar that is wholly awesome, and another side that is totally cliće.

I was going to suggest Patton, but then I realized the Patton was a huge dick for pretty much the entire movie.  But it's different 'cause he was a likable ass.  And the protagonist.

On a side note, weren't the dudes with guns in Avatar not official military folk?  I though they were just hired guns or whatever bought by whatever company was doing the mining.

Blah blah blah Avatar blah,
I checked that one out a couple weeks ago.  Definitely a pretty and well-made movie.  Besides that, I can't really say all that much about it.  It was fun, it wasn't bad, but it was generic as hell.  After watching the first 15 minutes, it's pretty easy to see exactly where the plot is going and how it's gonna unfold.  Pretty tropetastic.

Blah blah Sherlock Holmes blah.
Saw this one too, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

Avatar, to me, was pretty paper thin in terms of plot and characters, we have the nice "luke skywalker" hero who has lost everything and thus takes up his new life, saving the oppressed, being good and just.  The nasty army comander who is really just a big bad bully and then the wormy little money grabbing owner of the corperation.  (and the forbidden love interest, jelous betrothed etc. etc.) don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it but it is really not a masterpiece in any way other then the artwork and special effects.

That pretty much sums it up.

Anyway, I saw Triangle the other day. The trailer made it seem pretty interesting, though, like other movies, it really wasn't.

I haven't seem Sherlock Holmes yet. I don't really feel the need to go to that movie. The only reason I would see that movie is for Downey. But I'd rather see him in Ironman 2
