According to the internet it could be an issue of legitimacy with the cartridge. A lot of fakes floating around on eBay, which is where Muggins here got his. It'll work fine unless you plug it into a DS and power up D/P/Pt, then it wipes the save file.
So, I'm gonna go ahead and replay FireRed, trade everything across to Emerald (which shouldn't be an issue) and then migrate from there.
Oh, did I mention I'm going to replay FireRed, Emerald and Diamond along with my HeartGold playthrough? Gotta catch 'em all. (What's that? I probably won't do it? Shut up already.)
