For all things non-fiction I prefer reading my info online (back at Uni there was often no choice as not all academic papers are online and a lot of reading material will always remain in book form, but it's a pain if you have to take dozens of photocopies and if you need to quote a lot of stuff (no copy-pasting).
People mostly read books for fiction (not counting newspapers), and if I can choose between the audiovisual kind (sound, moving images AND reading) and just plain old reading, the audiovisual medium is usually going to win.

With epic stories like The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones I'm sure they're written like epic pageturners, but if you see the movies/ series first, then you already know what's going to happen pretty much so you'd just be reading it for its "literary constructions" or similar things.  I don't like comparing books and movies.  Yes, usually the books ARE better (which is why I've still only seen the HP movies once - they're too shallow compared to the books).  I don't want to ruin Game of Thrones for myself by spending a dozen hours reading and then getting annoyed with the inconsistencies in the series, or how certain characters look & are portrayed.  I doubt I would like the James Bond novels too - too different from the movies.  I like the movies, so I don't want to destroy my image of what I think the story is about.

We're spoiled these days.  But one of the things that can get me down is feeling pressure to partake in what many people consider to be normal.  I don't frequent music concerts, I rarely have a cook-out (BBQ), sunbathe, go to the gym, or try to set up an interesting online persona through Twitter or Facebook.

Most people don't recognize that society's come to expect so many things of us in order to fit in.  No one can successfully combine all "trendy" activities.

For me it works best to stick my hand in the sand for a few concepts.  If everyone is honest with themselves they'll realize there's a whole bunch of stuff they'll never touch either.  We all do it, we just use different reasoning to rationalize it.  I tend to give elaborate explanations but really I shouldn't have to come up with a case/ defence, so it's my life.  There's no wrong way of living your life (if you try to live by the law and avoid hurting others, that is).

I'm more broad-minded than many people I know, but that doesn't mean I have to like everything, all the time.  I compartmentalize like everyone else, but am just more aware/ conscious about it.  When the time comes for me to dive into literature that I consider to be worthwhile, I'll let you know.  But I won't read something just because it's "hot" at the moment.  I refused to get into HP and LOTR for that reason too (for a while - after the 5th book I bought and read them all in a short time and had a great time).  LOTR I read after the movies, too.

Fair enough. I for my part wasn't really trying to pressure you. I just thought you'd be missing out not reading them. (Hell, I myself haven't even read GoF yet, but I know I will one day and am pretty sure I'll like it a lot since it seems right up my alley.) Think if you met a Zelda fan who only played the 8-bit/16-bit games and refused to try the 3D ones.

That, and I at least was mainly teasing you anyway.

The Hunger Games movie is actually better than the book, so. But Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire are actually very different takes on the same story.

Also, Mattie needs to read the HP series already--or at least watch all the movies.

While I agree that the THG film was one of the better book adaptations I've seen, I don't think I'd go so far as to say it's better than the book.

Hunger Games is a better story than a novel. Strip away the prose and add in Jennifer Lawrence's acting and you've improved it.
