In the metaphorical sense, yes it could be considered to be so.
But before we simply held the belief that they held divine powers.
The discovery that the mushrooms had actually evolved this trait to protect their young was interesting.
The halucinogenic effects are only presents in the post reproductory fungi and thus have progeny, due to their size, consumers such as smurfs or the insectoid swarm, attack the larger mushrooms first.
They then begin to start tripping out, and the smaller mushrooms are protected as the swarms and smurfs can't consume down the chain of size eventually attacking the progeny.
For every mature mushroom destroyed, thousands of its progeny survive to maturity, thus securing the reproductory chances of about 10, because smurfian mushrooms are like earth pandas, they suck at breeding.
