I did a bad job writing that up there.. After re-reading it I couldn't even tell what I was talking about.. lol. Sorry guys. Really, this is a great game and it gets better with every patch. The latest came out today with contained a new mech for the clan category and gave server hosts new options.
Now, With that I have something to tell you all! I've created a server in this game and I'd like to invite you all to come hang out there if you like. Sure this game wont be everyones cup of tea.... but it might be for a few!
So I thought I'd give you some back ground information on me and my group I host for., I'm a mech head. I'm a huge fan of all things mecha. Macross, Robotech, Xenogears, Armored Core.... and obviously... Mech Warrior. I've always been a HUGE mech warrior fan since 95 when I played Mech Warrior 2 on pc. I couldn't get enough of that game, it had it all! Giant robots, explosions, cool fighting techniques and a storyline that was really growing on me. Later on, Mech Warrior 4 Vengeance came out... I instantly fell in love with the online mode. Back in 2004 my wife and I shared a pc and hosted our own server. Many members of the community there said that our server was a breath of fresh air. So many of the servers were clan sponsored and usually were just FOR that clan. Some clans (groups of online communities)
over enjoyed role playing with the storyline. For instance, Clan Wolf and Clan Jade Falcon members would often act like online trolls and despise each other. Flaming players when they entered an open server and starting fights all over the place. This junked up many good games. Our server was different.. it was more like a club or a bar. People would gather, laugh about the troubles of the day, have a few drinks and have a good time chatting and killing people of like mindedness. We didn't have a name... We were just Bunny (My wife) and my self known as Jackolope. One day we noticed 90% of the players in the server were in a clan or organization, not to be out done... we put in "WPPC" in our faction name. (The faction name is a place reserved under your name like a signature in a forum. It would give you a good indication on who this person was and what they are all about.) We worked in the city of Winter Pines and owned a pizza shop so we were "Winter Pines Pizza Clan" .... this was done as a joke.. To our surprise, a few regulars of the server put the same name in their factions.. we had accidentally created a real group. The name WPPC became synonymous with players that liked the no nonsense approach to the game and just played to have fun with it, relax with friends and make new ones and compete who could build the best mech and pilot it better than the next guy. We stayed in Mech Warrior 4 Vengeance until the past month and a half... I decided that the new version of the game that was no available from mektek.net FOR FREE was a better place to go. Vengeance cost money.... and it became quite rare! To pick up the complete set could set you back about 200 bucks! Not to mention that all the add ons would stop working on windows vista or windows 7..... The free release of the game called "Mercenaries" was a much better choice and would work on ALL operating systems.... I began the tedious task of building a NEW server just for this game. Many many many many hours of hard work was put into this server. Thousands of lines of code and custom scripts were typed away through the night over the past month. In the past week I have finished 90% of it and it is now operational and fully functional (the last 10% is about 20 maps that I cannot get to load,,,I probably have a comma out of place in about 3k lines of code... I'll find it.. ) the other bit can be fixed at a later time. The short story is.. the server works! And people are loving it...
Now my new server can hold 24 people at a time. That is a lot of people! This server is run 24/7 and the normal games (unless it is voted that the maps and game types change) are battle and team battle. These games are what 70% of the community plays and loves. Now why am I telling you people this? Well! We have all known each other for a long time..... quite the number of years for some of us. All these years I never pressured anyone to play this game with me here.. hell, I think I only mentioned it 2 times. I managed to get Link Reborn a member here to join me on Vengeance some years ago.... but that is another story. This new game... Mercenaries... is a lot of fun to play with friends. I know many of you are into all kinds of games and love forums.. This game is a bit like an interactive forum that you get to shoot things in! I can't really express how fun it can be and the game needs good people to keep it going. Right after the free release of mercs the active player count shot up to about 10 thousand.... After the release it became apparent the game was not perfect and had a few bugs to be worked out. Patches were then released to fix the game. Unfortunately..... after 12 patches that were a pain in the ass to install at the time.... the community grew bitter over the game and became dis interested in it. The current player count is now less than a thousand.
Now my server WPPC is drawing a lot of new players to the scene and a lot of people are happy to see a server that just wants to have fun!
Now I ask you guys, if just 3 or 4 of you decide to install this game and give it a try, me typing out all this drivel is worth it. This will probably be the last post in this thread unless any fish bite here. Now some of you are might be saying "I'm on the other side of the world... there is no one to play with at my time.." Nope, right now there is 22 people in the German server and has had lots of people in all the European servers. There are Australian servers and American servers as well. I play with a few German players every week. Very good ping and not many connection issues. We play fine together with no lag!
The server is located in the current version .3.1.51.03.01.0028 (called just .28 by most) and The server rules are simple, don't be an ass and have a good time! Simple enough, users of the server can vote to take 100% control of it. Change maps and game types on the fly.
I hope to see you guys there sometime. The game could use the fresh meat and it is a hell of a lot of fun! Best of all it is free!
