Leaping out of the shadows and coming straight out of nowhere, it's the 2010 Tingle and Navi Awards! After the long, drawn out process that was the Definitives, this year's TaNAs will be a quickfire blast through the very best that the Zelda series has to offer.

Nominations open until 21:00 GMT Thursday 2nd December

Phase 1 (19/11 - 2/12): Nominations
We start, as we always do, with the nomination stage. Below are this year's categories (Tingles good, Navis bad). All you have to do is post two contenders for each category in this thread which you think stand a chance this year. Why two? Well, partly its a lack of members but its also a hope of getting some more variety for the final vote-off.

Phase 2 (2/12 - 14/12)
... Which will happen on December 1st. That's right, you have until the end of this month (30 days hath November and all that) to get your nominations in, before the PM-only voting stage. Nominations here, final votes via PM when the time comes.

Results Day: 15/12/2010
On the 15th of December, we'll have our winners. And that'll be that. Will there be any surprises? That's entirely up to you.

So, let's have a look at this year's categories (including some new faces)...

Quick question: For the purposes of these awards, are we considering PH and ST as 2D or 3D?

We seemed to come to a consensus last time that Phantom Hourglass should be judged alongside the 2D games, so I assume that's the case again.

So, we're allowed to nominate two things in each category? Well...

This. I was thinking of doing the regular Tingles for the home consoles and the Tingle Tuners for handheld Zeldas, but that's overcomplicated by remakes and will only get worse with OoT 3DS.

Here are mine:

The 2-D Tingles

- Best 2-D Title - ALTTP

- NEW FOR 2010: Best 2-D Cutscene - ALTTP Ending

- Best 2-D Dungeon - Ice Palace (ALTTP), Ganon's Tower (ALTTP)

- Best 2-D Final Boss - Ganon (ALTTP)

The 3-D Tingles

- Best 3-D Title - OOT

- Best 3-D Dungeon - Forest Temple (OOT), Arbiter's Grounds (TP)

- Best 3-D Mini-Boss - Gomess (MM)

- Best 3-D End of Dungeon Boss - Stallord (TP), Ganon (OOT)

- Best 3-D Cutscene - MM Ending

The Cross-Dimensional Tingles

- Best Storyline - ALTTP

- Best Use of Graphics - WW

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Overworld - ALTTP*

- Favourite NPC - Shiek

- Best Recurring Enemy - Darknut

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Antagonist - Ganon

- Best Inventory Item/Weapon - Bow and Arrow, Ball 'n' Chain (TP)**

- Best Sidequest - Couple's Mask Sidequest (MM), Biggoron's Sword (OOT)

- Best Link - OOT, WW

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Character Design (Male) - Kafei (MM)***

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Character Design (Female) - Midna (TP)***

- Best Single Piece of In-Game Music - Dark Overworld (ALTTP)

- Best Full Game Soundtrack - OOT

- Most Challenging Game - AoL, ALTTP

- Best Gameplay Innovation - ALTTP, OOT

The Navis

- Least Challenging Title - WW

- Least Revolutionary - TP

- Least Loved/Most Loathed NPC - Mailman (TP)

- NEW FOR 2010: Worst Gameplay Mechanic - LoZ**************Correction! I thought "gameplay mechanic" was referring to the feel of the game. LoZ feels old, so of course it'd have the worst if it meant that. My vote for this gets changed to either changing tunics/boots/arrow types in OOT, or switching bomb bags.

- Worst Dungeon - Hyrule Castle (TP)****

- Worst Boss - Aquamentis (LoZ)

- Worst Enemy - Like Like (aka Shield Eater)

- Worst Inventory Item/Weapon - Slingshot (TP)

- Worst Game - AoL

*Had TP's had more substance (i.e. not just a bunch of grass and rocks everywhere...and have small villages here and there and just more places to visit like in ALTTP), it'd have probably won this for me.

**On these two I was not focusing on their visual design or "bad ass-ery" as much as I was focusing on the depth to which we get to know the character, and also their character development during the game.

***As a note, the bow and arrow is even more fun with the Hawkeye in TP (because sniping is fun, even though the arrows do start to dive after a long distance). As for the second one, you can't sit there and honestly expect me to believe that you didn't enjoy swinging that Ball 'n' Chain around (especially when an enemy comes rushing towards you only to be hit by it in the face....am I right or am I right?! ).

****Visually, Hyrule Castle was one of the best looking dungeons in the series by far. But in terms of gameplay, there was nothing original or challenging about it (especially if you got the great spin and mortal draw, those moves slaughter any normal enemy in the game). What it really had the potential to be was a level almost like ALTTP's Ganon's Tower. It could've been extremely complex and puzzling, but apparently the game designers cared more about meeting some stupid game release deadline or something than they did about making a quality ending to an otherwise great game.

Yeah, I kind of figured, but I was thinking mainly of that brand new "Best 2D Cutscene" category--since it almost doesn't seem fair to pit LttP, LA, and the Oracles vs. ST--especially since on the DS games the cutscenes are pretty much 3D. But alas, I suppose that is the sacrifice that must be made.

Yeah, it is a tricky category, but I'm looking to see if anyone can come up with something from the past games which they think could qualify - the more intersting the better - and maybe, just maybe it can triumph over the flashy modern games. For example, one of my nominations will go to the cutscene from Oracle of Ages where Link learns the Tune of Currents. Watching Tokkey bounce around his house like a loon always raises a smile for me.

ALttP's credits are going to win. You know they are.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and say that Hyrule Castle doesn't deserve anywhere near the shame that it got last year. It was a pretty disappointing dungeon, but anything that has bull-riding, soldier ghosts, and a hidden graveyard is better than this, with its inventive puzzles like "avoid the fire" and "draw a line from one torch to the other."

I should clarify that by "ALttP Credits Sequence" I meant the ending, not the actual credits. My mistake.

Also, am I right in assuming that Best/Worst Gameplay Mechanic/Innovation should be more specific than a game in general?

- Worst Boss - that boxing bolo guy in turtle rock in LA
This guy was a mini-boss. Maybe EA will allow it, but I'm just pointing that out.

Here I go!

The 2-D Tingles

- Best 2-D Title
A Link to the Past
The Minish Cap

- NEW FOR 2010: Best 2-D Cutscene
ALttP ending (Endings should probably be a separate category, I thought that was already the case )
Oracles ending

- Best 2-D Dungeon
Palace of Winds (TMC)
Vaati's Palace (FSA last stage)

- Best 2-D Final Boss
Dethl (LA)
Vaati (TMC)

The 3-D Tingles

- Best 3-D Title
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask

- Best 3-D Dungeon
Arbiter's Grounds (TP)
Stone Tower Temple (MM)

(Note: Spirit Temple OoT (MQ or otherwise) is my favorite but these two deserve to make it to the voting stage too!)

- Best 3-D Mini-Boss
- The dark ghost/spectre dude with the huge sword in TP's Arbiters Grounds, man, he's epic.
-Whatsherface surrounding by bats and wielding a huge axe in MM's Stone Tower Temple

- Best 3-D End of Dungeon Boss
Barinade (OoT)
Twinrova (OoT)

- Best 3-D Cutscene
Giants Stop the Moon (MM)
Ganondorf in TP confined in the mirror chamber, kills a sage, gets sent into the Twilight Realm

The Cross-Dimensional Tingles

- Best Storyline
Ocarina of Time
TWW

- Best Use of Graphics
The Wind Waker
Twilight Princess

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Overworld
OoT
LA

- Favourite NPC
Ezlo (TMC)
Purlo (TP) (Yes, i went there)

- Best Recurring Enemy
Darknut
Stalfos

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Antagonist
Ganondorf (TWW)
Vaati (TMC)

- Best Inventory Item/Weapon
Ball & Chain (TP) : highly effective =D
Deku Leaf (TWW)

- Best Sidequest
Biggoron's Sword Trading Sequence (OoT)
Reuniting Anju and Kafei (MM)

- Best Link
Hero of Time (OoT/MM)
Hero of Winds (TWW)

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Character Design (Male)
Darunia (OoT)
HMS (Happy Mask Salesman) (MM) I love all his expressions and how his gestures warp from one to the other, it's one of MM's many unique niceties.

- NEW FOR 2010: Best Character Design (Female)
Queen Rutela (TP)
Fairy Queen (TP)

- Best Single Piece of In-Game Music
Gerudo Valley (OoT)
TP's Hyrule Field theme (preferably on horseback, by day )

- Best Full Game Soundtrack
TMC
TP

The Adventure of Link
Spirit Tracks (mostly because of the freakin' trains, so it's not a good thing)

- Best Gameplay Innovation
Z-Targeting (OoT)
Use of Wiimote for aiming/shooting/fishing in TP Wii

The Navis

- Least Challenging Title
TP -- don't remember coming close to dying -- if you put the DS games or FSA then I'd like to ask about your death count
MM -- not a bad thing, just too many heart pieces and too few things devoted to annihilate you.

- Least Revolutionary
FSA (nice game, but it's basically FS gameplay based on ALttP)
ST (it's PH with a train.  You know it's true.)

- Least Loved/Most Loathed NPC
Sakon, the thief (MM) - he's evil AND creepy!
the Killer Bees (TWW- they freakin STALK you

- NEW FOR 2010: Worst Gameplay Mechanic
Having a 3-picture camera to complete a bazillion figurine collection sidequest in TWW
Being at the mercy of the evil trains o' death in ST

- Worst Dungeon
Forest Temple (ST)
Temple of Fire (PH)

- Worst Boss
Gyorg (MM)  I don't hate him, but he's kind of uninspired I guess
Armogohma (TP)  Again, I like squishing the big bad spider, but it's hardly innovative after pretty much every game's had a Gohma incarnation

- Worst Enemy
Dark Train (ST)
Wizzrobe (they're royal pain in the ass in ANY of the games)

- Worst Inventory Item/Weapon
Slingshot (TP)  It has pretty much no use, nothing Gale Boomerang & Arrows can't take care of much better.
Bug catching net (ALttP).  With exception of the Good Bee that can help you out, the item itself doesn't do much, in other games you just catch stuff in the bottle right away.  Fun to use against Agahnim, though XD

- Worst Game
FS
ST

This man speaks the truth. Listen to him.

Kaepora Gaebora's Hyrule Field monologue was the best meta-joke in any Zelda game.

I went to an OoT text dump and looked up the monologue I think you're talking about--and I can't find any meta-joke?

The reversed "Should I repeat all of this again? No/Yes" answers are deliberately mocking players who just mash the A button through the dialogue.

Then I think it's safe to say you're the only Zelda fan to derive any enjoyment from that "joke."
