I'm going up and down on this game the more I read about it. There's really positive previews around like this one, but then I also see people saying that they hate the control scheme (it's 8-way control, which probably isn't the best decision) and that the level design is rather mediocre. I'm still looking forward to the game, but I'm afraid of this turning out to be another NSMB.

Most major gaming websites published their reviews today. The consensus seems to be positive overall, but not as overwhelming positive as the response to the Galaxy games. Here's a few links:

Destructoid: 8.5

"While it's nowhere near as intricately challenging as the old scrollers from which it draws inspiration. and it lacks the ambitious scale of Super Mario Galaxy, it is still packed with innovative gameplay and that unmistakable Mario charm."

G4TV: 5/5

"The graphics are stunning, the levels are consistently unique, and the game plays out like a Mario fan's dream come true."

Gamespot: 8.0

"it successfully translates the classic, 2D Mario feel into a 3D setting that feels unique from the series' other 3D releases. Some of the game's other features fall disappointingly short of this creative mark, but you’re still left with a fun-filled platformer loaded with content."

IGN: 9.5

"As an experience, Super Mario 3D Land gets deeper the longer you play, as you sink into its particular groove and learn to appreciate it as a unique title - one that is separate from yet beautifully derivative of the entire Mario franchise."

I do love how it looks like a marriage of the Galaxy and NSMB games (with the classic flagpole exits).  Looks imaginative as always, and I love the Boomerang Mario!

I'm excited about it, but I think Mario Galaxy just seems more "epic" from what I've seen, but I hear the 3D is very much validated in this game, and I can understand the point of making smaller levels on a handheld screen.  Still not sure how I feel about the time limits, but it's good to see that you can get more time via power-ups.

The game is out but it looks like I won't be getting it until mid-December unfortunately (I could get it this weekend but there's no point in getting it and Skyward Sword at the same time).

I've played it all day, it's like a pocket sized Super Mario Galaxy spliced with New Super Mario Bros. so if you enjoyed those two titles, you'll love this game.  Also it really revalidates 3D as far as I'm concerned, I've dialed down the 3D only a few times and found all the life sucked out of the game when I did.  If you own a 3DS, this is a mandatory title.

Turns out I had a lot of free time today so I picked it up. Reached the end of World 2, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by a lot of things the game has done. There's lots of new ideas present in most levels, even though most of these are smaller or less fully realized than their counterparts in the Galaxy games.

Loved the nod to Super Mario Land at the end of World 1.

My progress:

(click to show/hide)

All in all it feels more "classic" than the Mario Galaxy games did, I always had a few issues with how cute Mario Galaxy ended up being, I think this game reels it back just a bit.  Still, some of the more jaw dropping moments of Mario Galaxy are missed here, especially the wonderful orchestral score and vastness of the space/planetoids.  Also the bosses are more classic feeling and lack the scale of their Mario Galaxy counterparts.

It's a wonderful hybrid chalk full of goodness and I think it's by far the best handheld Mario game to date.

Sweet!  Sounds great

Still have to wait until Friday, which sucks cause it's the same day as Skyward Sword so I don't think I'll get a lot done in it fast

Finished the Special World! Slightly more than doubled the playtime and threw in a hefty heap of challenges along the way. Lost a LOT of lives along the way, and...

That's neat!

The Special World took THAT long?

What else is in the statistics?

And at what point do you unlock

I finished the first eight worlds yesterday, and I'm fairly happy with the way the last two worlds turned out. The final Bowser fight took everything that made NSMB Wii's final boss great and improved upon it, which is great considering that NSMBW already had the best final Mario boss of all time.

Almost finished replaying the first eight worlds with both Bros and all gold flagged. Finished one stage in six seconds. *throws down gauntlet*

I'm around halfway done with the special worlds. Not a whole lot to say about the game, except that it's really good at what it does. So far I agree with Jord's assertion that this is the best handheld Mario title to date (though there isn't much competition of course), so we'll see if it holds up in the last stretch of the game.

That's a good point about it not having a lot of competition, aside from various ports of the main console games there's only been the first two Mario Lands and New Super Mario Bros.  I still need to finish the S-Worlds, but I've also been playing a lot of other games lately, I've been very gaming ADD and completing this game 100% isn't a huge mark on my to-do list(I tend to feel the same way about most of the Mario games lately though).

With Galaxy and Galaxy 2 I felt pretty content getting all 120 Stars and whatever extra the game had to offer just didn't feel that compelling.  I feel the same way about the S-Worlds, it's a lot harder, yes, but it's not really anything new, there's a couple surprises in the remixed design but it's not like there's a whole entirely new experience hiding under there.

As far as modern Mario goes, I enjoyed it more than Mario Sunshine and New Super Mario Bros. DS and about as much as New Super Mario Bros. Wii(I'd give NSMB Wii a slight edge for multiplayer), but as far as I'm concerned, the Galaxy games are still king.

I am, however, disappointed at how streamlined the Mario games have been getting, even the 3D games, Galaxy 2 doing away with the hub-world completely.  I really want to see Mario game that goes back to having a big hub world with lots of secrets, and I'd like to see one that maybe takes a page from Skyward Sword and integrates the hub-world design and missions a bit better.

While this could easily go down as the best handheld Mario, Six Golden Coins is always going to have a special place in my heart as it was the first game that really made me fall for the medium.

The Special stages certainly have made up for the ease of the original eight. My retries counter is now horribly close to 300. Fortunately, my actual life counter is near to 400. Seriously, how high is this sonofabitch gonna go?

PS: Still haven't topped that six-second level time.
