Welcome to the club.  Honestly it was a good move to just wait, and if you were able to get one when the price dropped early or did the Best Buy Price Trick to be a Nintendo ambassador for free...good for you.

The 3DS is my favorite piece of Nintendo hardware in a long time...I enjoyed the DS when it first came out, but I felt the lack of high-quality visuals and analog controls kept the system true greatness.  After a year or so with the DS Lite I was done, and didn't even bother with the DSi and DSi XL updates, and I'm glad I waited.  Still, the 3DS suffered an absolutely abysmal launch, I think Nintendo took it for granted that the gimmick would sell it.  3D is great, but some people genuinely don't like it, so otherwise you're just left with a system with better visuals than the original DS but no games to prove the point.

The lineup for the rest of the year looks great, and with PSV not coming out till next year, I think this holiday will prove to be the time when 3DS really comes into its own.  Let's hope Nintendo got a bit of comeuppance and doesn't pull the same shit with Wii U.

Also you can share 3D pictures, Nintendo uses a standard 3D file format, so you can either upload them with the browser(I think) or dump them from the SD card to the PC.

I actually went out and got it when it was still full price. But, i am very happy with it and it looks like a good year for the handheld! I have been a Nintendo fan forever, I suppose it was a geeked at birth moment because my dad is also a Nintendo fanboy! I have owned up to every handheld by them (except for gameboy micro which i kind of still want one because they look awesome!) I have to say i am proud of the 3DS and think it will make great money this holiday season!

EDIT: Does anyone want to share 3DS friend codes?

The trailers from TGS are now available on the eShop. As before, the Paper Mario trailer has easily the most impressive use of 3D so make sure to watch that.

My upper screen isn't cracked, but it got those hairline scratches from the bezel on the lower screen, sending it in for repairs soon(free of charge), and hopefully I'll have it back before Super Mario 3D Land comes out.

That's a serious design defect though.  My original DS had a dead pixel and I remember that being a big deal but this is just nuts.  I hope it doesn't happen again.

System update, GET!

Not my picture, sadly, but the fact is the 3DS now has a decent system for organising all those Ambassador titles and demos.

The eShop has also got a little update. A second menu bar has been added below the main, taking you straight to either 3DS Software, Demos, Virtual Console games or DSiWare. Straight to the stuff I want, demos, with no fuss.

Patches, starting with one for Mario Kart 7's Wuuhuu Island glitch, are also now an option.

Ooh neato!

I don't mind having everything out (giggity), but yeah the 20 Ambassador games do kind of clog up the view (which is already almost at its widest for me).  I could ditch some unused pictograms in there, à la unused desktop icons on one's pc.

What MK7 Wuuhuu Island glitch?

BTW, HS, you (and the other 3DS owners) should post their Friend Code in that shiny thread I started up the other day. Barely-acceptable, kid-friendly online interaction FTW!

Where do I get my FC again?

Smiley little orange square on the top row of touch screen icons shows your Friend List. Your FC will be the first code listed.

I need to go play with my 3DS again.

Get Kid Icarus. Problem solved.

Well, here's the first of probably many 3DS redesigns. It's the 3DS XL:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMTYcPQW4E" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMTYcPQW4E</a>

The new handheld's top screen is 90% larger than that of the existing 3DS at 4.88 inches (compared to the existing 3DS's 3.5"), while the lower touchscreen jumps from 3.02" to 4.18". Now that's a whole lot of handheld.

Despite the huge leap in screen size, the XL is actually only 46% larger than the regular 3DS, but naturally a similar amount heavier. Also in spite of the larger screen and bigger backlight requirement, the 3DS boasts a better battery than its predecessor increasing 3DS software playtime from 3-5 hours up to 3.5-6, and DS playtime from 5-8 to as much as 10 hours. Why they can't release a new battery pack for the regular 3DS only they know, but if you do already own a 3DS you at least won't be stuck with ANOTHER charger, as the XL will be released at launch (next month in Europe) cable free, although I hear that's Japan/EU-only. And on top of all that, the bundled SD card will also double from 2GB to 4GB, in anticipation of the downloadable full software that is to come.

Oh, and it'll be available in red, blue and silver. And it's nicely rounded at the edges. (Full tech specs available here.)

Phew. So, it's not the redesign everyone wanted (and anyone who bought a Circle Pad Pro will be pissed their peripheral won't work with this bigger 3DS) but it is a pretty good one, even if the early adopter in me is once again left a little sore. But I can already see it linking up nicely with the Wii U version of Smash Bros...

EU purchase price has yet to be confirmed, but it'll be out in the States for $199. I really like it...

It's rare for me to trade in a console, in fact it has never happened. But for the 3DS XL I decided to make an exception. Yesterday I headed into my local GAME (almost drowning in the process after a burst of British summer showers) and handed over my DSi, knocking 80 quid off the RRP and reducing my fiancée's rolling eyes to a subtler eyebrow raising  when I told her I had a new toy.

And what a toy it is. With almost double the screen size, games are enhanced considerably, 3D effects have a bigger impact and it's generally a lot better to look at. You may expect an unpleasant stretching effect from the a game's resolution being fitted over an area almost twice its intended size, but I've noticed no such issue.

I spent an hour playing the free copy of Mario Kart 7 I  got with the system on the XL, then an hour on the original 3DS. It's amazing how small the first one feels by comparison. It's something you can particularly notice when watching videos. If Nintendo ever meet their full-movie promises, then the XL's sales could skyrocket.

Another really nice touch is the extra "click" that comes from snapping the 3D slider down to 2D. For my wimpy eyes that can't handle too much of the third dimension (despite living in it) this is perfect as the original's slider could slip into 3D with the lightest of accidental touches.

On another click-related note, the plastic fixed-size stylus is one of the snuggest fitted sticks of the dual-screened handhelds.

It really is well worth the upgrade (unlike the move from DS Lite to DSi...) and could even have convinced me to abandon a decade-long tradition of early adoption. The 3DS is great, but the XL is much, much better.

Attached a pic from the System Transfer for a side-by-side comparison. In terms of the transfer, you needn't worry about losing your Ambassador privileges as the games AND your Ambassador status can be moved to the new system. You can also keep your Friend Code.

Well I'm sending my 3DS out for repair, and I don't have any system to trade in for the XL, and I really don't want to part with my original, even for the reduced price point.  Maybe when I see it I'll change my mind, but I've yet to see it at any retail.
