Americans is an improper term, unless referring to U.S., Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, Honduras, Panama, etc.

Referring to citizens of the United States of America as American isn't any more improper than referring to citizens of the United Mexican States as Mexicans.
