Home | News | Miyamoto Speaks on Twilight Princess

In an interview found in the V.I.P. Lounge of Nintendo of Europe's site, Shigeru Miyamoto told NOE staff that Twilight Princess would utilize the Revolution controller, contrary to earlier reports by Reggie Fils-Aime that GCN games would only work with GCN controllers when played on Revolution. Miyamoto still referred to Twilight Princess as a GCN game, though, so it is still not a Revolution only title.

This is the excerpt from the interview that is relevant:

OK, time to switch to Miyamoto’s other famous creation: Zelda. What’s the latest on Twilight Princess?

“I would say that we are progressing well with completing it,” says Miyamoto. “And one of the most important features is that, because Revolution can run GameCube software, when you play Twilight Princess on Revolution you can take advantage of the Revolution controller.”

Now, Miyamoto was careful not to give any examples of how Twilight Princess could be played on Revolution, nor does he specifically say a "GCN disc" put in into Revolution will use this feature. He says Twilight Princess on Revolution (I still have a theory that there is a special bonus disc being included which is merely a demo or something). Either way, this really shouldn't concern most people because of two very important factors.

First, we all knew (well, those of us not in denial) that Twilight Princess would probably utilize some Revolution functionality, even if it was just backwards compatibility. This game will move Revolutions, and it will not be at the cost of your traditional Zelda experience. Thus, Zelda will help Nintendo gain a foothold in the upcoming console race. DS is outselling PSP and has a better "image" than it as well. Perhaps Revolution can capitalize on the delay of PS3 and the apparent nonexistence of XBOX 360 (does anyone even care that this system is out).

The second reason you shouldn't worry is because this game is still for the GCN, and it has to play on a standard GCN controller (unless Nintendo found a way for the "Revmote" to work on the GCN). Thus, this game will still be traditional for those freaking out that Twilight Princess will be the first game to jump ship into the new "innovative" gameplay that Nintendo promises, as well as those already fearing Aonuma's statement that Twilight Princess will be the last "traditional" Zelda game as we know it. So, this brings us to one last burning question - was NGC right all along?

After rereading the article (which can be found in our gallery), it seems like they are talking like they really do know something. Now in retrospect, it truly looks like Jim Merrick leaked information to British media, and then was promptly asked to resign. Nintendo has been doing damage control ever since, giving out information that seemed to contradict other information from Nintendo sources, and thus creating an atmosphere of chaos. If indeed everything went this way, then Nintendo has pulled off one of the most amazing feats - keeping a game completely in the dark from fans for a year and not losing a single sale. Well, maybe a few, but nothing worthy crying over. I know people are expecting information at GDC, and I am hoping with you fans. But it seems Miyamoto and Reggie and everyone who's spoken this year agree on one thing - all the information we want will be revealed at E3. Let the countdown begin.
