Many fans expected Twilight Princess to make a showing at GDC 2006. Yet, something unexpected happened. We still got a new Zelda trailer, only it was for another Zelda game! Mr. Iwata revealed today that the DS installment of the Zelda franchise will be entitled "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass". The game is currently slated for a release later this year, and it will be playable at E3 in May.

As fans anxiously refreshed the IGN keynote speech page, or some other news page or blog, the words "one final adventure" appeared before us. Everyone expected Twilight Princess, but then the words "Zelda DS" appeared. Of course, during the actual conference keynote, Iwata paused and didn't say anything about Zelda. Instead, a short trailer rolled on the screens showing a top-down view of a maze-like environment, which had Link and a fairy appear in 3D. Only this time, fans didn't boo (although some did after they found out no TP was there)

After watching the trailer several times now, the gameplay really utilizes the DS. You can draw a path for your boomerang to follow before you release it. You can solve puzzles by writing down clues on your map. You sail with the stylus, and aim and fire your cannon with it as well. The gameplay truly looks innovative, and there is no sign of multiplayer action to haunt fans still recovering from all the Four Swords titles. Based on the look, and some in-game clues, the title looks to follow in the footsteps of The Wind Waker, although there is no confirmation on the storyline or the placement of this game in the overall timeline.

Perhaps most stunning is the fact players will sail the seas again. One of the biggest complaints about The Wind Waker was the excessive sailing. Perhaps this time around, Aonuma and company will get it right. Oh yeah, Aonuma's team is handling this game, along with Twilight Princess. Perhaps that may explain why Twilight Princess is taking so long, they have poor Mr. Aonuma working on two (possibly three) Zelda titles at once!

At the end of the keynote speech, Iwata state this:

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, is designed exclusively for the DS. It will launch later this year. It's a product of Mr. Aonuma and the team that has created most of the Zelda hits in the past. You will be seeing and playing Zelda both on DS and Nintendo Gamecube at E3.

So, it seems Link and his fairy companion (could Navi be back? Sure sounded like her!) will be available to E3 attendees this year and is scheduled for a 2006 release. We'll bring you more coverage as it becomes available.
