The Old Man was nice enough to take time out of his busy schedule this week to give us the latest installment of his popular column. Consumed by the release of Mario Kart DS (and who isn’t), we literally had to drag the Old Man against his will to his computer to tackle this week’s edition. He’s a stubborn old guy.

The debate over Twilight Princess’ ending… It must be an epidemic. One person brings up a theory on the ending of Twilight Princess, and then every other fan and their mother put up a theory on their fan sites. While we do not know the ending of Twilight Princess, many would lead you to think that it will end with the flooding of Hyrule and the death or disappearance of Link. While this sounds pretty cool and intense, there still is the chance Aonuma hasn’t made up that little twisted mind of his. With six months left until the game is done, there is a lot of time for the guys at Nintendo to pull a fast one on us. There is even a chance the game could be moved again in the timeline, to the delight of timeline pundits.

Italians are all the rage in the realm of Cosplay.

100 hours of gameplay… On the other front, some Chinese web site apparently conducted an interview with Eiji Aonuma that revealed Twilight Princess will take close to 100 hours to complete if you do all the side quests and collect all the items. This would put Zelda in the realm of Final Fantasy games, which take around that long to complete if you want to do everything. However, I am quick to point out Nintendo has made such claims about the length of Zelda before, so take this information with a grain of salt. I expect the game to probably take less time than that to complete.

Imagine the possibilities… Mario Kart DS and the Nintendo WiFi service officially launched this week for the public. I know this isn’t directly related to Zelda, but the game and the experience is just so damn good, I have to wonder what Nintendo has in store for us in the form of an online Zelda game. Fans have speculated what format such a game would be in; ranging from a Four Swords “party” style game to a full blown MMORPG. I think for the DS installment, it will likely be either a score based mode where you tackle levels and rack up points, or a co-op style game in which you have to balance helping your friends out, but still competing for the best score . I know that TSA is secretly hoping they track completion times, but I don’t see that happening.

What's going on in Hyrule... Rauru's Return got a redesign. Kasuto.net finally updated for the first time in who knows when. GameFAQs and IGN Zelda boards are still rampant with morons who think Twilight Princess is still coming out for Revolution, or they act like they just found out about the Twilight Princess delay. It does suck a bit that Twilight Princess was going to be out this week. It's really depressing, isn't it? Six months isn't so long to wait, is it?

Putting out an APB for… Conrad, the former webmaster of ZHQ. His site, Hylia.com, hasn’t been updated in over a year.

Zelda fan who gets to ride Epona to work… Hermit, for designing an extremely cool new skin based on this site for the Public and Private Forums.

Zelda fan who should hide out in the Evil Jar… Joe Cracker, who still insists his “Light of Courage” movie is being made and is the official Zelda movie endorsed by Nintendo.

Letters…

Hey Old Man,

A few questions for you (cause you just love answering questions, don't you?) and a few comments.

First, thank you for coming back. I was worried with the switch from ZHQ that you might fade into obscurity.

Second, a question, do you believe in a single timeline, double timeline or a timeline at all? What does TSA believe?

Third, have you ever seen this site?

I got a laugh out of it...ironically, I also felt like hanging myself. It's pretty low quality, so beware. Like fan fiction put to flash man.

Also, what happened to the GANNON-BANNED link on the site? Is the site still around?

And finally, how did TSA pick such a cool, yet simple, name for the new site? "The Hylia"...I'm surprised that isn't taken.

Thank you for reading,
Intas

We had a lot of concerns from active forum members that the site change would ruin everything. I think because TSA and the staff kept the regular forum unchanged (except for the cool new skin), most of the existing fan base was happy. The older sites, while decent looking and not lacking in updates, didn’t have much substance to them, at least that is what I thought.

The new site still needs to fill in the game pages with the speed run stuff, but at least all the other sections are up and running and have content. I personally believe in a timeline, but I do not know what to make of it because we don’t even know if there is a single or multiple. I tend to lean toward the single timeline, but I’m open to amendments.

That flash video is horrific. I wish I hadn’t seen it. Some fans have bizarre interpretations of Zelda.

As for GANNON-BANNED, I think TSA wanted to keep it disassociated from the main site to keep any ill-will away. I personally think the site should go down because as funny and popular as it got, it’s not very professional and I know TSA wants to make The Hylia more mature and serious.

For the site name, I specifically remember talking with TSA and Martin about it. TSA apparently didn’t want a generic, overdone name. He also wanted to pick a name that wasn’t so commonly known to the average fan, but still signified Zelda. Hylia is only mentioned via Lake Hylia, and in the ALttP Player’s Guide. Ironically, TSA was trying to break away from the old ZHQ hex that many associated with him, but in choosing The Hylia, TSA actually now has a name in common with Hylia.com, a site run by former ZHQ webmaster Conrad. He swears it wasn’t intentional, and that he was royally pissed when he realized it. But I think it’s just his “fate” to carry the ZHQ stigma forever. Every great fan has to have some skeletons in the closet like the rest of us.

I apologize in advance for the multitude of questions:

When do you think that we'll hear more about Twilight Princess? What about Tingle RPG and Zelda DS? When do you think that TP, Tingle RPG, and Zelda DS will be released? What do you think about the Revolution, and in what ways can you see a Zelda title working with the controller?
-Mongooseman

I believe TSA said end of this year. However, I personally think the safest bet is the Game Developer’s Conference, as last year Nintendo showed off a new trailer then. I’m not sure about Tingle RPG or Zelda DS, but the January Bonus Issue of Nintendo Power comes out soon, and it usually has upcoming info. If not, probably March at GDC, or May at E3. I believe Twilight Princess will be released in June 2006. I have no clue about Tingle RPG, I would guess late next year or never in the US (heard a rumor it’s Japan-only). Zelda DS at the earliest would be late next year, or 2007. I think the Revolution title should focus on interacting with the world of Hyrule like never before, and there should definitely be some aspect of online functionality. Imagine downloading new “areas” every month, having a never-ending Zelda game.

What's the deal with people calling Link a cowboy ect...?
- Cableguy83

Aonuma called Link a “cowboy” in early interviews this year, but at E3 he said he is not like a “Clint Eastwood” style cowboy, but rather what we in the United States would call a “ranch-hand”. He’s just experienced handling livestock and handling outdoor chores. He’s not some John Wayne cowboy who goes riding around hunting criminals and being lawless. Although Link does fight on horseback against bands of enemies…

Are you the old man that gave me the cheap, wooden sword; tricked me into gambling away all my hard-earned rupees, and then stole the few I had left when I rescued you from a cave-in? Or are you the old man who led me on innumerable goose chases in labyrinths by offering me misleading, confounding and unintelligible advice like; "TOP OF THE WATERFALL" and "GO TO THE NEXT ROOM" and "DID YOU GET THE SWORD FROM THE OLD MAN"?

Follow up: How did you achieve immortality?

I’m the guy who gave you all the misleading information and took your money! My brother, the hippie of the family, is the one who gave you money and your sword. What a moron. I obtained immortality thanks to the creators at Nintendo and the wonders of technology. I’m digital, fool.

In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (out now!), Link splits himself into four different dudes and four different colours... or should I say colors. I just have one simple question: Why did he choose purple as fourth player? Why couldn't have chosen... yellow, or something? Yellow is a uni-sex colou...color. There'd be less arguments on who gets to be the feminine Link. Okay, so the ladies would love to be the girly looking Link, but as I've said before, yellow is a unisex color. So, to get back to the main question, why'd he choose purple?

Oh, and just one more comment; he's purple, but has a deep voice. Now THAT just confuses me.
- Lynkx

Red, Green, Blue, Purple. Those are the colors of the Link rainbow in the Four Swords game. Here’s probably the best answer. Link has been Red, Green and Blue in games before. I am guessing they didn’t go with White, even though Link has been that color before, because it’s not technically a color. I think Nintendo was actively trying to cater to the feminine market, since Zelda does have a lot of female and feminine male fans. Nintendo has been gender-confusing before. If you go play Majora’s Mask, notice Tatl is a girl, but has blue text, and Tael, a boy, has pink text. Just a little confusing?

Closing thoughts… Reggie Fils-Aime apparently commented in Club Nintendo magazine, a Mexican publication, that Nintendo will be making a Metroid movie, and then a Zelda movie. He elaborates by saying Nintendo took back the rights to the Metroid film and will be producing them in-house. Perhaps a Zelda film really is coming after-all?

Did you know… Eiji Aonuma was credited as Eiji Onozuka in Ocarina of Time. The reason for the change from Onozuka to Aonuma is he got married, but took his wife’s last name instead. Talk about a devoted husband.
