Zelda: Twilight Princess

Speaking to Nintendo Dream magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Twilight Princess for Wii will have a new control setup. This response is most likely prompted by George Harrison's remarks last Wednesday during Camp Hyrule, which revealed the Wii version of Twilight Princess would not be playable with a GCN controller. With no real difference between the two versions, and the controls, except for aiming, nearly the same, few fans saw the logic in the decision.

However, today it was revealed by Miyamoto that the Wii version will utilize the Wiimote to swing Link's sword. This decision has been confirmed to be made post-E3, so any news agency or magazine claiming this was fact anytime before E3 was lying, for the record (IE NGC). However, this seemed to contradict what Aonuma said in EGM around E3 - he said that they considered using the Wiimote for the sword, but they felt players would get too tired.

I guess fans reactions have once again influenced the creators. In addition, apparently the bow will be used as a "B" button item, not a D-pad item. Now word on whether this means when you get the said item in-game, or if perhaps Link will start off with this item early on. There is also no clarification on additional items, as in if they're still D-pad items, or if you can equip others to the B-button.

There was also another tidbit we discovered through our sources - for those of you who played the E3 2006 demo, and were annoyed with how you changed items in the sub-menu, rejoice. It is now said that the item sub-menu can be navigated and interfaced with just like previous versions in addition to the Wiimote point and equip option.

There was also a brief mention from our sources on the instrument in the game. While they would not confirm what it was, they did say playing the instrument on Wii will utilize the Wiimote, but it also obviously functions on the GCN as well. Will we be conducting with a baton, playing a string instrument, or perhaps blowing into a wind instrument? Only time will tell.

The one element that still remains a mystery to all is how this new Wii control scheme will work on the horseback portions, as well as the Wolf Link portions. It is easy to speculate on the horseback controls, but since nobody in the public or press has played the Wolf Link portions (or at least allowed to say they have), it's a little ambiguous how this all will factor into the newer game mechanics being introduced in Twilight Princess.

I will be on hand at the Wii Party in about three weeks, and a new build of Twilight Princess is almost assuredly going to be there. Hopefully the Wolf or Horseback portions are available, and hopefully we can get videos or photos of it to show off.
